Position Overview
Reporting directly to the Senior Design Manager, Residential Development, the Design Technician will be responsible for assisting with the progress and quality control of design documentation associated with the development of multiple residential, commercial, non-market or mixed-use projects.

The Design Technician is a blended role that requires a combination of design and construction experience.  This position is likely best suited for a person with an architectural or building science education paired with a minimum of 7 years relevant experience.  The candidate will love to live in the details and have a keen interest in understanding how things come together.  The position is possibly best described as an inhouse coordinating professional, who actively reviews drawings and keeps external consultants accountable in order to ensure a high level of coordination and that Beedie standards are maintained.  

Key Responsibilites

    • Work closely with the project Development Managers to establish drawing production schedules, milestones and expectations that align with the broader project schedule
    • Review drawings at key points in the production schedule – independently and with project Development Managers.  Drawing reviews will entail working with a combination of hardcopy drawings, AUTOCAD and Bluebeam overlays
    • Identify conflicts in the design documents and work with internal and external team to rectify them
    • Assist estimating with design specific questions during the pre-con estimating process
    • Review design details with the Construction team to increase value engineering
    • During construction, assist Development & Project Managers with site issues and construction administration, including the RFI and shop drawing coordination process

Desired Skills and Experience

    • An unwavering attention to detail, unparallel drive to understand how things actually get delivered and the aptitude to help create the documentation necessary to make it so
    • Post-secondary education in Architecture, Building Science, Engineering or Construction
    • Minimum of 7 years of architectural or construction administration experience (or mixture of both) on mid-to high-rise, mixed-use or residential developments.  Varying levels of experience may be suitable for this role and compensation will be commensurate with candidate’s abilities
    • A strong understanding of the full design and construction process
    • A strong grounding in repeatability, constructability, construction sequencing and trade scopes
    • Good working knowledge of construction documents, drawings, plans, specifications, architectural design documentation, detailing, building materials and codes, construction techniques, as well as building material compatibility and characteristics
    • Proficient in AUTOCAD, Bluebeam & Sketch-up
    • Aptitude with BIM software including Revit, Revizto, or similar, is an asset as Beedie looks to implement these technologies.

$115,000 - $125,000 a year
The annual base pay range for this position will be based on the desired experience level for this role. Additionally, Beedie recognizes exceptional individual and team performance through our pay-for-performance bonus program.
