Beedie Capital is a multi-strategy direct investment platform that manages the alternative investments for Beedie, one of Western Canada’s largest private companies. Focusing primarily on the Technology and Mining space, we combine the strategic capabilities of an institutional investment platform with the entrepreneurial mindset of a privately owned business.
Our investments range from $10M to $50M as either equity or structured debt (i.e., subordinated debt, convertible debt), primarily in the US and Canada to both public and private companies. Our flexible mandate allows us to apply an agnostic and opportunity dependent approach to the industry, duration, structure, and size of our investments.
Position Overview
Joining our growing team of 14 (including 4 accounting and operations professionals), the Senior Accountant will oversee all aspects of the corporate accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting for Beedie Capital. This role requires a trusted team player who will collaborate across the company and develop a deep understanding of the business needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Reporting and Audit:
- Prepare quarterly and annual financial reporting packages at the consolidated and individual entity level, including cashflow and note disclosures for audited statements
- Develop and issue reporting for various levels of management including Deal, Operations and Executive teams
- Ensure reporting from external fund managers are received in a timely manner and reconciled to the GL
- Prepare annual audit documentation, including investment continuity schedules and other working papers. Liaise with auditors throughout the annual audit process
- Ensure the integrity and consistency of accounting records in accordance with GAAP
- Responsible for oversight of full cycle accounting, including reconciliation of sub ledgers, analysis of GL, bank reconciliations, review of invoices and payments and review of deployments and other investment activities
- Coordinate and follow all aspects of month-end close, quarter-end, and year-end activities to meet deadlines
- Act as a team resource to resolve accounting and tax questions and issues including identifying, researching, and coordinating implementation of new accounting standards and tax rules as they arise
- Review investment closing documents to ensure proper accounting treatments
- Prepare complex journal entries and schedules, and review journal entries and other deliverables from junior staff
- Analyze and reconcile investment portfolio between core accounting system and investment management software
- Prepare tax returns and supplementary working papers for complex entities and review those prepared by junior staff
- Prepare quarterly tax pro-forma and adjust instalment payments accordingly
- Review and approve GST remittances
- Delegate tasks and provide guidance, training and mentorship to junior staff
- Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Analyze financial and non-financial operational expense data to support overhead and income projections
- Assist with the P&L and cash flow budgeting and forecasting process
- Support the manager with cash flow projections including tracking unfunded commitments and variance analysis
- Coordinate funding from lenders for upcoming deployment or any other cash needs
- Provide insight to improve processes and increase efficiency across all functions
- Identify and recommend solutions for control deficiencies
- Proactively build relationships with the Deal Teams to support ad hoc assignments

Desired Skills and Experience
- Completion of accounting designation (CMA, CGA, CA, CPA)
- Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in either a full-cycle accounting environment or a public practice accounting firm
- Strong understanding of accounting standards (ASPE)
- Experience with financial reporting, including consolidations
- Strong work ethic, sense of responsibility and confidentiality
- Excellent decision marking, communication (both verbal and written), and analytical skills
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks independently and collaboratively
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute effectively within a team environment
- Comfortable and confident in asking questions
- High attention to detail while maintaining a broader strategic perspective
- Demonstrated ability to give guidance and provide mentorship to junior staff to complete a task together effectively
- Introductory knowledge or a keen interest in investment fund industry
- Prior experience or exposure to Fund Accounting is desired, but not required
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment
$80,000 - $100,000 a year
The annual base pay range for this position will be based on the desired experience level for this role.
