Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, Worker Compensation Division, has an opening for an Accounting Services Specialist in its Omaha, Nebraska office. This individual supports the financial integrity of the organization by ensuring the collection of deductible and premium balances. This will involve confirming amounts due, evaluating collection strategies, resolving disputes, and serving as a key liaison for finance-related inquiries. The Accounting Services Specialist collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to drive resolution and improve collectability, while delivering exceptional customer service.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Balance Confirmation & Collection: Confirm deductible and premium balances due to the company and initiate timely collection efforts. Establish payment arrangements when applicable and ensure accurate documentation of all actions.
    • Strategic Collection Evaluation: Assess each collection opportunity to determine the most effective recovery strategy. Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., Underwriting, Claims) and external partners to maximize collectability and escalate unresolved balances appropriately.
    • Dispute Resolution: Investigate and resolve disputed balances by working closely with internal departments and external stakeholders. Ensure discrepancies are communicated clearly and resolved promptly.
    • Finance Liaison Support: Act as a point of contact for inquiries related to billing, payment plans, and cash application. Provide guidance and support to internal teams and external customers to ensure accurate and timely financial transactions.
    • Customer Service Excellence: Respond to inquiries professionally and efficiently. Maintain a customer-focused approach in all interactions, ensuring satisfaction and resolution.
    • Reporting & Documentation: Maintain thorough documentation of collection activities and generate regular reports to management on progress, trends, and outstanding issues.
    • Perform additional tasks or special projects as assigned by management.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Education: Minimum of Associate's Degree from two-year college or technical school in Accounting or related discipline required. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related discipline, preferred.
    • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of related experience required. Industry experience preferred.

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS

    • Must have knowledge of general accounting principles, office operations, workflow analysis, data entry and file management.
    • Must be proficient in collection and negotiation tactics.
    • Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of applications and be able to master applicable databases, systems, and vendor software programs.

    • Language Ability: Able to read, analyze, and interpret financial statements, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Able to write concise reports and professional business correspondence. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients and employees of the organization at all levels.
    • Math Ability: Able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Able to apply basic math principles and concepts of basic algebra.
    • Reasoning Ability: Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
