Data Analyst, Biological Data

Cambridge, MA /
Technology /
Full Time
As a Data Analyst for Biological Data at Biobot, you will help our biology labs deliver reproducible data to our customers. Biobot is rapidly growing, working with our in-house lab and partner laboratories to measure SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater at hundreds of sites across the USA. As we scale, data consistency is incredibly important; our customers need accurate measurements of COVID-19 trends so they can make good public health decisions for their communities. You will ensure this consistency by evaluating new lab processes for accuracy, working closely with our lab scientists to resolve any problems, normalizing data, and performing ongoing QC.

While this position is part of the Data Science team and won’t require any hands-on lab work, you’ll need to become familiar with the nitty-gritty of our lab processes--so we’re looking for someone with strong quantitative skills and  some experience in a molecular biology lab.

Note: This role requires approximately 1 day/week onsite at our Cambridge, MA lab.

What you will be doing

    • Analyze data from routine lab process changes (e.g., onboarding a new partner lab or incorporating a new batch of a reagent), and communicate results back to laboratory staff
    • Develop and implement normalization approaches to ensure consistent results across different labs and processes
    • Serve as a key point of contact between the lab and Data Science teams
    • Continually monitor data for technical artifacts and work with the lab to resolve any issues
    • Develop and implement SOPs for lab data QC, and review SOPs for lab processes
    • As time allows, assist with the development of new assays (e.g. you might design PCR primers to detect a new pathogen)

What you need to succeed

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s in a relevant field (e.g. data science, computer science, biology), or equivalent work experience
    • 2+ years work experience in a lab, data, and/or QC role. Master’s degree can substitute for 1 year of experience.
    • Programming experience, including working with tabular data and making figures, and a willingness to learn Python
    • Some hands-on experience in a biology lab (you have done PCR or similar assay at least once)
    • Experience analyzing quantitative biological data
    • Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written
    • A detail-oriented, organized, and data-driven approach to your work

What will help you succeed

    • Experience performing qPCR and/or analyzing qPCR data
    • Experience with Python including libraries such as pandas and matplotlib

Some of our benefits

    • Unlimited PTO
    • 100% Biobot paid medical and dental insurance
    • 3% company contribution to your 401k
    • Free lunch and commuter benefits for onsite work
    • and more!
About Biobot

At Biobot, we are working together to build a team environment in which everyone can thrive and is proud to belong. We are an equal opportunity employer and our goal is to be a diverse team that is representative, at all job levels, of the society we live in. We encourage applications from candidates of all identities and backgrounds, including those who are traditionally underrepresented in technology startups.

Our mission is to transform wastewater infrastructure into public health observatories.

Named as one of Fast Company’s most innovative companies in the world in 2021, Biobot Analytics is a wastewater epidemiology company and uses technology developed at MIT to measure biomarkers in sewage to better understand population health in cities. We first launched an opioid product to support government and public health officials in responding to the opioid epidemic, and in 2020 launched a Covid19 product to estimate the scope and trend of the outbreak in communities. We have operated in almost 500 communities across 43 U.S. states, generating Covid19 case estimates for over 13% of the U.S. population.

Battling the opioid epidemic and now the Covid19 pandemic is just the beginning - we’re transforming sewage into a data asset and building a public health database. Eventually, Biobot data will be an early warning system for disease outbreaks, a map of nutrition disparities, and more. Headquartered in the Boston area with an office in NYC, we aim to create the bedrock of human health infrastructure and smart cities in countries across all six continents.
