Our SelectLeaders client is a vertically-integrated, self-managed real estate investment trust (REIT) with over 40 years of experience in developing, building, acquiring, and managing high-quality office, retail, and multifamily properties, primarily located in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States. They also offers general construction and development services to third-party clients, in addition to developing and building properties for its own portfolio. They are headquartered in Virginia Beach.

The Financial Reporting Manager, reporting directly to the Director of Accounting, is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of financial consolidation and for coordinating the preparation of consolidated financial statements, as well as all periodic financial filings with the SEC. This role involves collaboration with the entire accounting team to guarantee the completeness and reliability of financial data. The Financial Reporting Manager also plays a key role in addressing technical accounting inquiries and supports the Director of Accounting in drafting policies that align with the overarching accounting framework.

Additionally, the Financial Reporting Manager ensures the timely, comprehensive, and precise recording of all books and records related to the real estate financing segment, as well as all non-operating segment activities. This includes responsibilities within the accounting close and reporting cycle, specifically concerning the Company’s debt and derivatives portfolio, as well as general and administrative expenses.

Responsibilities

    • Directs the Financial Reporting team responsible for preparing SEC filing requirements, including Forms 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, registration statements, Section 16 filings, and any additional filings as necessary.
    • Leads and develops financial reporting accountants by setting performance objectives and goals for each team member to enhance the operational efficiency of the financial reporting function.
    • Ensures a robust internal control environment and proactively identifies opportunities to improve processes, enhancing both quality and efficiency.
    • Maintains the financial reporting systems utilized for generating consolidated financial reports, ensuring data integrity, operational efficiency, timely data imports, and accurate reporting.
    • Assists or takes the lead on special projects designed to enhance departmental operations and meet the needs of the operations team.
    • Oversees the consolidation process, which includes compiling consolidated balance sheets and income statements, integrating results from ViewPoint and Yardi trial balances, and reviewing eliminating consolidation entries.
    • Manages the financial reporting team's preparation of quarterly and annual reports on Forms 10-Q and 10-K, including financial statements, notes, management’s discussion & analysis, and all required SEC disclosures, while incorporating feedback from internal reviewers, external auditors, and SEC legal counsel.
    • Coordinates the annual proxy statement filing, related proxy filings, and the organization of the annual meeting, engaging with internal stakeholders, external SEC legal counsel, and the Company’s transfer agent.
    • Reviews and coordinates all earnings releases, supplemental financial packages, and supporting documentation, including the necessary “fact-checking” of financial information.
    • Ensures adherence to all SEC, FASB, and NYSE regulations and guidelines.
    • Manages the XBRL tagging process for SEC filings, ensuring its accuracy.
    • Conducts accounting research to determine appropriate financial treatment for significant or unusual transactions related to construction, development, acquisitions, leases, joint ventures, real estate financing activities, and equity transactions, including share-based payments.
    • Assists the Director of Accounting in drafting accounting policies across various areas, providing implementation guidance and examples.
    • Leads the Company's transaction log process, coordinating with key personnel to ensure comprehensiveness and precision, encompassing the review of business agreements and structures related to GAAP accounting, including hedging, mezzanine, and preferred equity agreements.
    • Oversees accounting for the debt and derivative portfolio, including reviewing the quarterly derivatives workbook and debt amortization tables, and collaborating with external accounting specialists to ensure proper treatment of interest rate hedging activities.
    • Manages accounting for the real estate financing segment, including the review of quarterly impairment analyses and evaluation of the CECL provision for the investment portfolio.
    • Ensures timely completion of all corporate accounting responsibilities, maintaining an efficient monthly close process.
    • Coordinates and manages third-party consultants involved in areas under responsibility.
    • Conducts financial statement analysis to ensure the highest quality of financial reporting, performing quarterly and annual reviews and approvals of consolidated financial information while ensuring its accuracy and timeliness.
    • Assists the Director of Accounting with the coordination, guidance, and execution of the external audit, working closely with external auditors, internal auditors, and accounting division colleagues.
    • Maintains the Company’s related party listing.
    • Serves as project manager for the implementation of the BlackLine FCM software within the Accounting & Finance department.
    • Manages the Financial Reporting budget in collaboration with the Director of Accounting.
    • Demonstrates a strong commitment to enhancing internal customer service.
    • Assesses current processes to identify opportunities for improvement and facilitates or leads the implementation of these enhancements.
    • Performs ad hoc reporting and special projects as directed by the supervisor or department head.

Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
    • Over 5 years of accounting experience in public accounting or the REIT industry.
    • CPA designation or CPA candidate status preferred.
    • Strong understanding of US GAAP accounting principles and disclosure requirements.
    • Experience in reviewing and/or drafting SEC Forms 10-Q and 10-K.
    • Preferred familiarity with the commercial real estate or REIT sectors.
    • Proficient in the Microsoft 365 application suite.
    • Ability to produce high-quality financial reports within strict deadlines.
    • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills.
    • Strong leadership and organizational abilities, with meticulous attention to detail.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration across diverse teams.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate meaningful relationships.

    • Skilled in identifying important transaction details and relevant accounting guidelines.
    • Knowledge of Yardi accounting software and/or Vista by Viewpoint Construction software is a plus.
    • Familiarity with Workiva financial reporting software is a plus.
