Apprentice Brewer

Brewing coffee is vital to what we do here at Blue Bottle Coffee, whether it be for our kegs to be put on tap in our cafes, our distinctly delicious cans of Three Africas or our delicious, Nola cartons. Our Apprentice Brewer will learn our brewing process from roasted bean to final product, working with our Brewery Leader, QC and Production teams to not just maintain but elevate our quality standards.

This is a full-time, hourly position based out of Berkeley. You’ll be a critical member of the production department, a team united by the basic love of producing great coffee.

You will

    • Learn the craft of coffee brewing through observation, instruction and committed study
    • Assist our Lead Brewer in all brewing aspects: set-up, filtration and packaging. This includes weighing, grinding and mashing coffee in batches; pulling brew samples and quality control; supporting our canning runs and more
    • Create and manage extensive and scrupulous notes detailing accurate batch history and coffee metrics using Google Sheets or other available online record keeping tools
    • Maintain our plumbing and brewing equipment, ensuring it’s in top form for all brewing needs, using and handling cleaning chemicals with the use of Personal Protection Equipment
    • Operate heavy machinery including electric power jacks and keg washers
    • Participate in QC tastings and cuppings to develop and strengthen your palate
    • Work production shifts regularly so that you engage in each step of the process and understand brewing procedures holistically
    • Keep all work areas clean, organized, functional for you and your team

You have

    • Working knowledge of basic hardware and tools
    • Experience working in fast pace environment (ideally in production)
    • High School Diploma

    • Ability to:
    • Stand, walk, sit, for long periods of time
    • Spend prolonged periods of time (1-2 hours) working in tight quarters for extensive cleaning of brewing vessels
    • Climb ladders
    • Use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, or crouch
    • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (with assistance)
