Tax Department Overview
BPM’s Tax team (internally referred to as the Private Client Service Team) provides comprehensive financial and business advisory services to private, owner-run companies, including family-owned businesses and start-ups. Our Bookkeeping Manager will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of client financial records, supporting tax compliance, and leading a team of skilled bookkeepers.

Position Summary
The Bookkeeping Manager oversees a team of bookkeepers who support clients with limited internal bookkeeping expertise. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of client general ledger records, managing workflow and deadlines, onboarding new clients, and serving as a key point of contact for both clients and internal tax teams.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of bookkeepers, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
    • Oversee the day-to-day bookkeeping operations for a diverse client base, ensuring timely and accurate completion of tasks such as accounts payable, customer invoicing, bank reconciliations, and compliance filings (1099s, payroll, sales tax).
    • Manage task lists, deadlines, and workflow for the bookkeeping team, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and adherence to firm and client timelines.
    • Onboard new clients, including assessing their bookkeeping needs, setting up systems and processes, and educating clients on best practices.
    • Review and ensure the accuracy and completeness of client general ledger records prior to tax return preparation.
    • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, explaining financial concepts in clear, client-friendly language and providing proactive solutions to bookkeeping challenges.
    • Identify and resolve discrepancies in client records, recommending process improvements and workflow enhancements.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant tax compliance requirements and accounting standards.
    • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and client-focused team culture.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

    • 7+ years of progressive bookkeeping experience, including supervisory or management responsibilities.
    • Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks and Intacct (Sage Intacct); experience with NetSuite, MRI, and other accounting systems is a plus.
    • Strong understanding of both accrual and cash basis accounting.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and client relationships.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial information to non-accountants.
    • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills; experience with cloud-based accounting platforms and integrations.
    • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and commitment to data integrity.
    • Experience onboarding clients and implementing new bookkeeping processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • ProAdvisor certification in QuickBooks or Intacct.
    • Experience working in a public accounting firm or supporting tax compliance.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
    • CPA or progress toward CPA is a plus.
