BRICK currently has schools in two regions: Gateway Academy in Newark, New Jersey, and BRICK Buffalo Academy in Buffalo, New York.
 
Gateway Academy Charter School was formed this past summer by merging Achieve Community Charter School (K-8) and People's Preparatory Charter School (9-12), two schools that having been serving students and families in Newark for 13 years. As a full K-12 continuum, we start our college-focused academic programming in kindergarten and yield better results for Newark students for generations to come. We are so much more than a school; we are a full ecosystem of supports that spans from cradle to career. We provide our families with free wraparound services like prenatal care, career services, and housing support. Our high school alumni receive up to six years of post-graduate assistance. Gateway Academy attracts a diverse staff devoted to nurturing our students’ intellect and identities in order to prepare them to graduate from college and to chart their own course.

Overview
The School Custodian plays a pivotal role in school operations by ensuring a clean, safe, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role includes a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks, as well as oversight of specific operational functions that support the school's daily activities. The custodian will ensure that the school building and grounds are kept clean, sanitary, and presentable at all times.

Essential Functions
      Cleaning and Maintenance:
      Daily cleaning of all shared spaces and property in accordance to BENs standards
      Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust floors, carpets, and surfaces in classrooms, hallways, offices, restrooms, and other areas.
      Empty trash cans and recycling bins, and properly dispose of waste.
      Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and replenishing supplies such as soap, toilet paper, and paper towels.
      Wash windows, walls, and ceilings as needed.
      Ensure classrooms and common areas are properly set up and maintained for daily activities and special events.
      Perform deep cleaning tasks during school breaks and holidays to ensure the building is thoroughly cleaned and maintained.
      Ability to assemble any furniture that is ordered by the School Operations Coordinator
      Routinely inspects building to ensure that everything is in working condition
      Must be able to arrange equipment or furniture for events or meetings
      Routine walkthroughs throughout the school day
      Respond to any student accidents, spills, and urgent needs
      Perform cleaning functions such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, emptying trash cans, sanitizing bathrooms and cleaning desktops
      Assist teachers and administrators with any request such as moving furniture, replacing light bulbs, and helping with deliveries
      Must be able to take and implement feedback

      Safety and Security:
      Ensure all entry points (doors and windows) are locked or secured after school hours.
      Report any safety hazards, maintenance issues, or security concerns to the appropriate personnel.
      Assist in emergency situations by following established protocols and providing necessary support.
      Maintain clear and safe pathways inside and outside the school building, including shoveling snow and spreading salt during winter months.

      Maintenance Support:
      Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, fixing leaks, and minor carpentry work.
      Assist with seasonal tasks such as snow removal, lawn care, and salting walkways.
      Monitor and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems as needed.
      Coordinate with external vendors for larger maintenance projects and repairs as required.

      Inventory and Supplies:
      Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment; request additional supplies as needed.
      Ensure all cleaning equipment is properly maintained and stored.
      Keep accurate records of supplies used and ordered, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.

      Collaboration and Communication:
      Work collaboratively with other custodial staff, school administration, and teachers to ensure a clean and welcoming environment.
      Respond to requests for assistance from direct manager promptly and courteously.
      Participate in regular meetings with the Operations Team to discuss maintenance plans and address ongoing issues.

      Working Conditions:
      The position may require evening or weekend shifts depending on school activities.
      The role involves physical labor, including lifting objects up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and performing repetitive tasks.
      Exposure to cleaning chemicals and various weather conditions is expected.

Qualifications:
      High school diploma or equivalent.
      Previous custodial or maintenance experience preferred.
      Basic knowledge of cleaning techniques and safety procedures.
      Ability to operate cleaning equipment and machinery.
      Physical stamina and ability to perform tasks that include lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.
      Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
      Good communication and interpersonal skills.
      Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
      Perform other duties as requested by the Director of Operations.
 
Qualifications and Skills
      Demonstrates meticulous attention to detail and strong follow-through skills.
      Proficiently manages cash and cash intake.
      Ability to create and maintain student records accurately.
      Capacity to take initiative, prioritize tasks, and work independently.
      Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
      Proficient in Google applications such as Word, Excel, and Access.
      Exhibits maturity and ability to work independently.
      Demonstrates flexibility, maturity, and ability to manage competing priorities.
      Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
      Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor under pressure.
      Prior experience working in schools and/or urban communities is preferred.
      Flexible and possesses a sense of humor.
      Enjoys working with children of all ages.
      Ideally possess 1-3 years of teaching or administrative office experience (preferred).
       Demonstrated ability to multitask effectively and prioritize strategically.
      Openness to feedback and willingness to take personal responsibility

$36,000 - $46,000 a year
