The Role

Art at Brilliant highlights the wonder and awe of math and science to a global audience. Brilliant is seeking a leader with a passion for visual storytelling to lead a team of 8 illustrators, animators, and technical artists.  

As the Head of Art, you will work alongside educators to further develop Brilliant’s style of visual storytelling, set team culture and hiring practices, and guide refinements to our illustration language. You will be joining a passionate and experienced team of entrepreneurial-minded people who are working to make a meaningful impact in the world. 

This role will report to the VP of Content.

You

    • Have 5+ years professional experience working on a creative team, including at least 3+ years in a leadership role
    • Have managed creative teams that include illustrators, animators or designers
    • Thrive in a fast-paced, consumer-oriented environment
    • Love math and/or science and are thrilled by the challenge of communicating it through visual storytelling
    • Are a strong systems thinker, and have experience implementing a visual system across various media types, such as digital products, social media, or brand/marketing
    • Have good communication and presentation skills
    • Energized by making others more efficient through process and automation
    • Are hungry to learn and grow, and have the work ethic to follow through on your ambitions
    • Have a dose of pragmatism, and are comfortable weighing ideal solutions against the realities of a live product
Your Qualities

Strong design eye. You are a hands-on leader in illustration, editorial, animation or technical art with a strong understanding of how composition, color, metaphor come together to make a visual sing. You can direct creative work to ensure it complies with brand and design standards while also pushing its boundaries and evolving the system. 

Storyteller. You love making complex concepts simple and easy to understand using art and technology. You are excited to work with other teams to establish strategic and creative approaches to meet the needs of a content project.

Organized. You manage team resources and projects with proactiveness to ensure the highest caliber of work is possible.

Excellent collaborator. You are excited to build a strong understanding of STEM material, including the technical, and develop a point of view for what “excellent” visual media means in the Brilliant world of math, science, and computer science. You also understand the nuances of how visual needs may differ between content, product, and marketing.

Idea generator. You lead by example to consistently inspire creative colleagues to create pioneering ideas in visual storytelling. You generate useful, usable ideas across existing and emerging illustration, animation, and technical art platforms. You enjoy developing practices and processes to inspire, innovate, and harness new ways of thinking. 

Mentor. You love to train, mentor, and manage art team members. You are able to proactively identify and resolve issues, and build a culture that attracts the world's most talented artists, and recruit them into it.
