Job Description:
This position requires a creative Structural Designer who can manage and execute traditional steel and concrete design assignments.  This work is often done in support of plant outages (turnarounds), as well as the support of routine maintenance and reliability organizations.  Strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to mentor less experienced team members, are critical in this role.  Some minor travel within Chicago area required.
 
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
·         Perform a variety of routine design assignments under the direction of an engineer, including increasing responsibility based on performance
·         Receive close supervision on new aspects of assignment but embrace some freedom to exercise judgment in making design and engineering decisions
·         Draft interpretation of own design into completed working drawings and apply design fundamentals to finished work product
·         Incorporate standard notes and details for use in construction documentation 
·         Manage and incorporate electronic redlines from Structural Engineers using established workflows
·         Take complete ownership of design portion of the structural scope, reliably working to meet schedule, budget, and quality requirements; and delegate to junior staff where appropriate
·         Establish high standards of self-checking work in conjunction with peer review, as well as coordinating work with related disciplines
·         Must be able to mentor junior staff by assisting in finding answer to technical questions and concerns
·         Work proactively to advance workflows, systems and tools within design/drafting arena, including design automation initiatives
·         Ability to embrace emerging technologies
·         Display an ability to provide quality reviews of models and documents prepared by others to assure design and project standards are met

Qualifications and Skills

      Qualifications:
      Associates degree and/or2-year technical degree or certificate of completion from an accredited designer/drafter course (or equivalent) preferred
      Must have 8+ years as a Designer with 4 years in Structural discipline within Refining, Chemical, Power, Steel, or similar process industry
      Experience performing field walk-downs a plus; and job leadership experience helpful
      Experience with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding code required
      Familiarity with concrete foundations and footing design a plus
       
       
      Technical Skills:
      Proficiency in Autodesk Design Suite required (AutoCAD, Plant 3D, Navisworks Recap)
      2D and 3D design and modeling experience required as well as strong PC and CAD skills, including efficiency in utilizing computer software to complete design assignments 
      Familiarity with 3D modeling in Revit a plus
