The primary duty of a Business Wire Newsroom Lead is demonstrating effective communication and leadership skills while managing a newsroom operations team, in addition to performing general editorial duties.
Monday-Friday 8:00 am EST – 4:30 pm EST
What You Will Do
- Assume full responsibility for a team, ensuring all tasks are completed accurately and efficiently including regular sweeps to make sure no items are pending and fall through the cracks, such as emails, messages or monitoring tasks; assigning press releases and completing quality checks on orders
- Serve as a main point of contact in the handling of high-profile projects
- Prioritize work load in the newsroom to ensure that high-profile and/or high-priority projects take precedence
- Anticipate and identify problems, and take appropriate action to bring about resolution
- Serve as a liaison to operations and sales managers, keeping them informed of client concerns or problems when necessary
- Assist newsroom personnel with the handling of complex or unusual news-release and/or client situations, including offering guidance in regard to the proper escalation and handling of problematic copy or working with sensitive clients
- Demonstrate effective leadership; lead by example and ensure that newsroom staff meets expectations set by management
- Effectively evaluate the day-to-day performance of direct reports; make sure they follow standard operating procedures.
- Coordinate recruiting, onboarding and training of new editors; oversee ongoing training of experienced editors as needed
- Directly manage team members and handle people management tasks, including but not limited to: Managing Time and PTO requests in Workday, goal setting and tracking, writing and conducting annual Performance Reviews, team scheduling, overseeing team and individual motivation and discipline
- Communicate with fellow team leads in order to stay informed on current pending releases, issues, etc.
- Participate in monthly operations meetings, or review materials and recordings if unable to attend, and ensure necessary information is relayed to direct reports
- Conduct regular team and 1:1 meetings with direct reports
- Compile designated monthly reports
- Create, update and maintain various team-specific documents on SharePoint
- Provide help with testing and proofing resource documentation as requested
- Be a lead member and participant of the Content Approval Team, helping to approve first release drafts for new clients and helping editors navigate through questionable copy situations
- Handle all essential duties of Newsroom Editor, as needed
What You Will Need
- Proven experience with all aspects of the Newsroom Editor role. This includes handling VIP clients, prioritizing workload and accurately distributing press releases with complicated distributions and formats.
- Previous training and/or manager experience preferred
- Strong organizational, time management and multi-tasking skills
- Ability to work under time constraints and deadlines
- Excellent and adaptive verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to prioritize time to maximize the greatest overall return on effort spent and probe for sufficient information to determine the significance and urgency of a specific task and devoting the appropriate amount of time to any given task based upon its relative impact on the successful completion of key job objectives.
