About the Role
The Lead Project Manager, East Coast Ports, will manage CALSTART’s work to decarbonize port operations in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Reporting to the Senior Director, Northeast Region, this role will work closely with port, freight, and community stakeholders to accelerate the deployment of zero-emission vehicles, port equipment, and infrastructure. This role will serve as the primary point of contact and project manager for CALSTART’s Clean Ports Program projects with the Maryland Port Administration (MPA) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) while supporting the organization’s broader efforts across the region.  This position will be a critical member of CALSTART’s Northeast Region team, with the option to work remotely and/or from our Brooklyn office. Preference for candidates who will be able to attend regular meetings and events in Baltimore, New Jersey, and New York. 

Duties & Responsibilities

    • Manage Overall Projects for Port Clients: Act as project manager across three innovative port decarbonization projects. Represent CALSTART in regular meetings with clients, provide project updates, manage program budgets, and ensure timely submission of invoices and project deliverables.  
    • Lead Trucker Engagement Initiative for PANYNJ: Engage drayage truck operators through targeted outreach, organize stakeholder discussions, and develop meeting materials. Prepare reports featuring input gathered to inform port decarbonization plans.   
    • Coordinate Project Scopes Across CALSTART Teams: Manage project workflows in collaboration with CALSTART subject matter experts to effectively deploy vehicle and equipment incentives and support the development of near-port charging hubs.  
    • Implement External Engagement and Marketing Strategy: In coordination with CALSTART marketing team, develop and implement strategy to communicate port funding opportunities and program impacts. Organize in-person and virtual events to engage port stakeholders. 
    • Support CALSTART’s Regional Objectives: Provide strategic support to CALSTART’s business development, policy advocacy, marketing, and communications activities to accelerate the transition to zero-emission transportation throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.  

Qualifications

    • 5+ years of direct project management and project delivery experience, preferably in the clean transportation, port sustainability, or shipping/freight industry.      
    • 3+ years experience working on zero-emission transportation projects.   
    • Proven experience designing and executing projects, from conception through delivery, with a focus on meeting timelines, managing budgets, and achieving project goals.      
    • Knowledge of the administration of voucher incentive programs or other grant related projects.     
    • Understanding of the current and historic challenges faced by near-port communities.   
    • Strong writing, presentation, and communication skills.      
    • Excellent partnership development and stakeholder engagement skills.      
    • Proven ability to synthesize large amounts of data into clear language for stakeholders with vary levels of industry knowledge.      
    • Experience working with government agencies or nonprofit organizations, demonstrating an ability to navigate complex regulatory environments and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.   

Desired Qualifications

    • Experience working with medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) vehicle and equipment dealers, manufacturers, drayage fleets, shippers, carriers, and infrastructure providers, with a strong understanding of the industry's needs, challenges, and zero-emission opportunities.   
    • A strong understanding of port electrification initiatives, policies, and funding programs with hands-on experience in the sector.
$85,000 - $97,000 a year
CALSTART values transparency and strives to provide as much information regarding compensation as possible. The complete salary range for this role is $85,000 - $97,000Pay is determined based on several factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, qualifications, experience, education, internal equity and other factors relevant to the job.
