Interested in working with a groundbreaking company that’s focused on decarbonizing the atmosphere? Founded in 2019, CarbonCapture is a California-based climate tech company that makes modular machines that can be connected in large arrays to capture massive amounts of CO2 directly from the atmosphere. CarbonCapture was created at Idealab, a leading technology incubator.

We are looking for an Adsorption Process Development Engineer who will work closely with the material development team to conduct fundamental adsorption process testing, DAC process cycle testing, and dynamic modeling to develop state-of-the-art DAC process cycles. This includes studying DAC process parameters in various sorbents through multiple techniques such as gas breakthrough, collecting adsorptive data such as isotherms, heat of adsorption, gas selectivities, CO2/H2O kinetics studies, and model them using dynamic software such as ADSIM adsorption. This individual requires deep knowledge of chemical engineering fundamentals (thermodynamics, heat & mass transfer, kinetics) and gas adsorption phenomena.

Responsibilities

    • Manage mixSorb gas breakthrough analyzer by preparing test plans, working with test technicians, gathering data, analyzing results, and presenting to the team
    • Setup ADSIM model based on the DAC process to predict performance KPIs based on various scenarios
    • Develop validation plan for dynamic process modeling based on experimental lab data
    • Assist System team with simulation results and TEA analysis for different scenarios
    • Contribute to literature data for sorbent and novel DAC processes
    • Contribute to sorbent characterization and ranking various sorbents
    • Evaluate new ideas/processes through modeling and process testing
    • Carry out other process development engineering related tasks and projects as required

Requirements

    • M.S. or preferably PhD in Chemical Engineering or related fields
    • Minimum 3 years of industrial experience, or equivalent experience in gas adsorption related fields.
    • Experience with ADSIM adsorption software (preferably) or gPROMS
    • Background in adsorption science either by relevant working experience and/or publications in the field of adsorption
    • Fundamentals of heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, kinetics, and other chemical engineering principles and disciplines
    • Excellence in converting characterization and processing test data from the laboratory to the simulation platform and detail-level data analysis
    • Strong background on thermodynamics and adsorption kinetics models
    • Deep knowledge and familiarity on breakthrough gas analysis concept and theory and data analysis
    • Excellent problem solving and data presentation skills, and ability to work within collaborative, cross functional teams

Desired

    • Experience with synthesis of porous solid sorbents for CO2 capture
    • Experience with sorbent characterization instruments/maintenance (TGA, FTIR, XRD, DVS, 3-Flex, mixSorb breakthrough instrument)
    • Experience in testing and adsorption process modeling
    • Knowledge and experience of solid adsorbents and TSA/VTSA or Joule-heating cycle development
    • Experience with carbon capture technologies
$120,000 - $160,000 a year
The salary range displayed above is specifically for those who will work in or reside in the location listed. In extending an offer, CarbonCapture Inc. considers factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s job-related skills, experience, knowledge, and relevant education/training.
