Founded in 2019, CarbonCapture is a California-based climate tech company that makes modular machines that can be connected in large arrays to capture massive amounts of CO2 directly from the atmosphere. CarbonCapture was created at Idealab, a leading technology incubator.

This role is a member of the Product Engineering team, which is responsible for the engineering design, supply chain and manufacturing of CarbonCapture’s Direct Air Capture product. The engineer hired will own the detailed design of various mechanical systems and collaborate with the Systems Engineering, Test, Project, and Supply Chain teams to ensure that the product designs are aligned with all requirements and need across the organization. This position is in-person and based out of our Los Angeles office.

Key accountabilities:

    • Mechanical design: Own the detailed design of various mechanical systems; work closely with internal and external stakeholders to establish design requirements, develop designs from first principles, perform analysis using hand calcs and FEA and present detailed designs and corresponding analysis in technical reviews and discussions
    • CAD design: create detailed CAD models and create and manage the release of detailed engineering drawings, assembly instructions, and test documentation; design the mechanical components and systems using SolidWorks; create and review mechanical drawings leveraging GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and tolerance stack analysis; familiar with document control procedures and best practices
    • Product delivery and Prototyping: work closely with the Supply Chain team and strategic vendors to develop and procure purpose-built components and subsystems; work closely with the Fabrication team to rapidly iterate through prototypes by designing, building, and testing proof of concept test articles
    • Project management and leadership: establish mechanical design timelines and tasks, including analysis of risks, opportunities, and costs; lead and mentor junior engineers and conduct regular design reviews; create qualification programs to validate new technology and mechanism designs; key contributor in establishing company best practices and procedures.


    • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, with a typical minimum of 6 years of industry experience
    • Extensive experience leading the detailed mechanical design and development of a complex sub-system from concept through delivery, with strong preference for design experience related to large integrated mechanical systems, such as automotive or chemical process systems
    • World-class knowledge with and demonstrated portfolio of one or more 3D CAD softwares (e.g. Autodesk , Solidworks, NX) and engineering drawing standards, including GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
    • Strong understanding and wide application of advanced engineering principles in solving mechanical engineering problems, performing trade studies, developing conceptual configurations, analyzing mechanical systems, and facilitating the fabrication, assembly, and qualification of system hardware
    • Demonstrated ability to complete analysis using hand calculations and FEA (using Solidworks FEA, Ansys or similar)
    • Strong understanding of the detailed design of one or more of the following: large industrial valves, actuators, mechanisms, pressure vessels, vacuum chambers, gaskets and seals
    • Strong technical writing, communication, and organizational skills; effective collaborator in a multidisciplinary team
    • Adaptability to a start-up environment; capability to take initiative, develop own tasks and timelines, and solve broad, ambiguous problems without direct technical oversight

Desirable experience:

    • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and/or 8+ years of industry experience, with 5+ years leading engineering design and manufacturing development without appreciable direct technical supervision
    • Experience with international engineering standards and in validating and qualifying designs, particularly for harsh outdoor environments
    • Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing processes and prior experience related to sourcing and procuring parts on a large scale
    • Experience with the validation and verification process of custom hardware
