Position Overview 

The Private Equity Analyst is a new role to our research team, a core role with tremendous opportunity and impact for the right candidate.  Reporting to the Director of Life Science Research, this role will be a leader in the firm's private equity deal-making, due diligence, and investment management areas. The focus of the role is to operate from a deep and fundamental understanding of the life sciences ecosystem and to creatively discover opportunities, conduct diligence, and partner with our team to bring these opportunities to fruition.

The ideal candidate would thrive in a role where they are able to partner with and support existing portfolio company growth whilst also working on forward-looking investment initiatives that support our long term thematic perspective and demonstrate a passion for investing in the field of Life Science.  We are looking for someone that is orientated to the private investment landscape with strong commercial aptitude through an understanding of the technology and science that underpins the advancement of the field and how that will impact the end markets and future of the space.  

Responsibilities

    • Generate investment opportunities and potential acquisition ideas across the life sciences space, by cultivating and maintaining relationships with companies, investment bankers, consultants, and others. 
    • Play a role in the negotiation aspect of the transaction process. Interact directly with the management of portfolio companies, target companies, and investment banks, conducting negotiations to source and creatively construct private investment opportunities.
    • Filter through data and assumptions to determine key drivers of value to support dialogue around valuation, business risks, competitive landscape, and opportunity.
    • Manage investments from a service-oriented mindset, putting the firm’s interests above all else to thoughtfully communicate the upside and downside of any potential opportunity with the investment team.
    • Communicate effectively to engage clients and/or senior investment bankers during a live deal that represents the Casdin brand and investment ethos.
    • Influence outcomes by partnering with key stakeholders to drive strategic decisions that can generate outsized returns.
    • Mentor less experienced members of the team to build out the capabilities of leveraging a private equity vehicle.

Requirements/Qualifications

    • Candidates should have at least 10 years of relevant work experience in the investing space with at least 5+ years of private equity experience within the Life Sciences industry.
    • Candidates should have at least a Bachelors Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Science, Biology, or related area. Masters, MBA or Ph.D. considered.
    • Strong researcher mentality, deep enthusiasm for the scientific innovation happening in the industry and its commercial application.
    • Ability to creatively build ideas around business combinations, underappreciated assets, and other ways to create value, seeing opportunities that aren’t obvious to many.
    • Exceptional EQ and communication skills to directly interact with the management of portfolio companies, target companies, and investment banks when operating in a lead role (e.g. conducting negotiations, sourcing deals, dealing routinely with the Investment/Operating Committee).
    • Emotional Intelligence to build relationships, assess EI competency in executives, and navigate Boardroom dynamics.
    • High degree of intellectual curiosity, problem-solving skills, and the ability to quantify qualitative insights.
    • Self-starter approach and motivation to deliver strong results to completion in a highly-detailed manner.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with a desire to work in a highly collaborative team environment.
    • High Proficiency in financial modeling and valuation skills.
    • An appreciation for and ability to connect with business builders and entrepreneurs.
