About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

The Senior Assembly Engineer will be responsible for various elements of the SPARC Tokamak assembly process. The engineer will work in a cross functional mechanical engineering context to solve complex problems related to the construction of the SPARC Tokamak design, build, and activation process.

This team member will:

    • Provide design feedback to SPARC sub-system designs with a focus on manufacturing and assembly. Participate in both formal and informal design reviews to ensure what is delivered can be assembled
    • Scope a open ended solution for a given problem from concepts, to tooling design, through testing, all the way to implementation leveraging previous industry experience to bring creative solutions together quickly
    • Design, analyze, draft, and manage fabrication for custom creative tooling solutions from start to finish, owning all aspects of the project along the way
    • Work with teammates in a collaborative fashion to receive feedback early and often to ensure all requirements are met. Many SPARC projects involve high loads, vacuum requirements, and complex manipulation requiring the involvement and review of adjacent sub system experts
    • Serve as extreme owner for a process by testing, implementing, and handing off to production technicians for repeated use for any given operation or tool(s)
    • Draft and release work planning instructions to clearly and concisely outline the planned work ahead
    • Support hands on operations during Tokamak Assembly serving a variety of roles in the process

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering
    • 5+ Years of Mechanical Engineering Experience demonstrating project ownership
    • Analysis experience (i.e. FEA, ANSYS, FEMAP, ABAQUS)
    • Experience with NX, CAD Modeling
    • An ability to clearly express and critique ideas
    • An aptitude to use data to drive decisions
    • An emphasis on simplicity over complexity
    • Values that align with our company’s values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique

Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

    • 3+ Years of individual mechanical project ownership and design experience
    • Lifting Operations Experience
    • Knowledge of Welding & Capabilities (don’t need to be able to weld)
    • Experience with Carbon Steel Welded Constructions
    • Experience with Basic Joint Design (Double Shear, Single Shear, Bolted Patterns)
    • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
    • Perform activities such as typing, standing, stooping, climbing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
    • #LI-Onsite
