Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is the surest path to limitless, clean fusion energy. Our mission is to enable world-wide clean energy for everyone, creating a sustainable environment for current and future generations. We have created a credible path to an operating fusion power plant in 15 years which leverages our novel collaboration with MIT and funding from strategic and financial investors who share our vision. This begins by developing a new class of high-field superconducting magnets that will enable the SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net energy from fusion for the first time. To execute this plan, we are now looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skillsets and experience that relate to this role.

This role will be the second hire on the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team. FP&A analyst will play an important role in helping build the FP&A function and establishing best practices in the organization. The role will allow the FP&A analyst to grow as a professional, learn about working in an R&D environment at an exciting start up as well as develop and improve processes. The primary function will be to manage financial performance against budget and develop robust forecasts for the purpose of reporting to management and budget owners and informing important business decisions. 

This team member will:

    • Responsible for tracking activity for various portions of the Company’s budgeting and monthly forecasting activities as well as reporting which will include updating actuals, budget and forecast in Adaptive Planning
    • Support the Finance team and budget owners in assessing prior performance and trends, to develop future forecast, lookahead and risks/opportunities
    • Be responsible for collaborating across the organization to develop and vet sound business assumptions
    • Build reports and dashboards in Adaptive Planning and in BI Reporting tools such as Tableau, Google Data Studio, Power BI
    • As needed, complete financial analyses for decision being made in SPARC and across company
    • Contribute to periodic and ad-hoc initiatives of the FP&A department

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance
    • 3-5+ years' experience in preparing and coordinating budgets, modeling, forecasts, and related reporting
    • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) including experience with financial reporting, forecasting and analysis across the income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flows
    • Requires strong quantitative and financial analytic skills
    • Strong Excel experience
    • High energy and engagement, with flexibility to complete work during periodic very busy times
    • Collaborative work style
    • Experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders with a strong customer service orientation
    • Excellent verbal and written communication & data presentation skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with both business and technical teams
    • Experience with Adaptive Planning, BI Reporting tools such as Tableau, Google Data Studio, Power BI

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

    • Ability to work effectively with accounting systems such as Odoo
    • Budgeting and forecasting for large capital projects
    • Ability to work effectively with accounting systems
    • Experience preparing and reviewing complex models in Excel
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent analytical, planning, and organizational skills
    • Adaptive Planning
    • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
    • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
