Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

The design of the SPARC tokamak is continually advancing, including the diagnostic systems that will be used to control the plasma and deliver the scientific data necessary to inform the design of ARC. Many SPARC diagnostic systems, ranging from magnetic field pickup coils inside the tokamak to photomultiplier tubes and imaging detectors on beamlines, will require electrical engineering expertise to ensure that they function as specified in the challenging electromagnetic, thermal, and radiation environment that will exist in and around SPARC. The diagnostic team seeks candidates with a range of experience in electrical engineering, signal processing, and analog and digital electronics to design and commission the various electrical systems that will ensure the performance of SPARC’s scientific diagnostics. Work scope includes tools needed for first plasma operation, as well as enhancements expected over the life of the tokamak. Key challenges will include minimizing electromagnetic interference and radiation effects on diagnostic systems as well as developing custom electrical components to operate in areas where commercial-off-the-shelf items cannot meet SPARC specifications. We welcome cross-industry career changers from avionics, robotics, and more to build a diverse team to meet these challenges. Candidates will work alongside CFS staff, MIT-PSFC partners, and fusion community collaborators from around the world to design and build the tools that will measure net energy from a tokamak for the first time.

This team member will:

    • Lead the design of custom electrical components in support of multiple SPARC diagnostics.
    • Creatively tackle the diverse set of challenges presented by a variety of diagnostic technologies.
    • Work side-by-side with scientists and engineers in the SPARC team to translate measurement concepts into detailed, cost-effective designs.
    • Provide wide electrical engineering support that balances risk and schedule, ranging from hand calculations to bench-top R&D and prototypes of proof-of-concept solutions.
    • Iterate with the wider SPARC I&C team combining skills and experience to solve shared integration challenges.
    • Support the resolution of technical issues that arise during the testing of SPARC diagnostics.
    • Provide hands-on support for diagnostic assembly and calibration.
    • Contribute to strong safety culture while helping to commission and operate SPARC diagnostics.
    • Grow expertise that helps CFS build a core competency in electrical measurement tools that can deliver future fusion devices optimized for power production.
    • Candidate may be asked to review work and provide feedback to collaborators or contractors providing input to SPARC diagnostic designs.

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

    • At least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field (electrical engineering, robotics, etc.)
    • A fundamental understanding of electromagnetism and its application to electrical systems and electronics.
    • Experience designing and troubleshooting analog and digital electronics, including PCB design.
    • Hands-on experience designing and testing electrical components used in analytical instrumentation, scientific diagnostics, or process monitoring.

Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

    • Experience designing electronics for extreme environments, including electromagnetic interference and ionizing radiation.
    • Experience with high-power electronics, circuit protection equipment, and/or ground fault monitoring.
    • Familiarity with hazards relevant to electrical systems, including high-voltage equipment.
    • Familiarity with circuit modeling software such as LTSpice and/or signal processing in Python/Matlab/C++ (or equivalent).
    • Attention to detail with an ability to pivot between topics multiple times per day.
    • An ability to clearly express and critique ideas.
    • An emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
    • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, and sitting, for extended periods of time
    • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, and strong magnets
    • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
