Power Business Team Lead

Cambridge, MA /
Business Team /
Full-time
CFS’ mission is to enable world-wide clean energy for everyone, creating a sustainable environment for current and future generations. We’ve created a credible path to an operating fusion power plant in 15 years which leverages our novel collaboration with MIT and funding from strategic and financial investors who share our vision. This begins by developing a new class of high-field superconducting magnets that will enable the SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net energy from fusion for the first time. To execute this plan, we are now looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well; improve our team by adding diverse perspectives & new ways of solving problems; have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits; and have skillsets and experience that relate to this role.

CFS’s mission is to deploy 10,000 fusion power plants in time to make a difference for climate change. Our Power Business Team Leader will be responsible for organizing and driving the team that will determine our go-to-market plan to achieve this goal. This is a creative and entrepreneurial role that will report directly to the COO and coordinate activities across multiple functions in the organization. This is a ground floor opportunity to play a key role in creating CFS’s fusion power business unit, and to drive execution of the power development milestones for the group that will deploy the world’s first fusion power plants.

This team member will:

    • Be responsible for determining, articulating, and driving CFS’s plan to execute the fastest possible market adoption of our ARC power plants. ARC1 will be a first-of-a-kind plant, and thus it is an entrepreneurial exercise that will include: revenue model and value chain determination; tech-to-market fit and go-to-market strategy; pro forma financial modeling; beachhead geographies, countries, customers, and development partners; deal structures for customers and partners; financial and corporate structures for project development; incorporating regulatory frameworks into business analysis; and others
    • Articulate this plan through the creation of materials for CFS leadership, financial partners, power plant partners, and the general public to ensure that all audiences are well-informed
    • Execute this strategy. Build external relationships with all the relevant customers, partners, financiers, and other stakeholders in future ARC powerplants
    • Coordinate and drive the activities of a cross-functional team of employees, consultants, and advisors who are performing various elements of this work

    • Specific activities will include:
    • Analyze global power markets and competing technologies and build a framework to monitor the dynamics of key markets over a 10-year time horizon
    • Manage the development of economic and financial models to analyze the trade-offs that will be critical to off-take acceptance
    • Create term sheet template documents for all agreements that will support a project financing of the first power plant transactions
    • Foster strong relationships with a wide range of external partners and stakeholders

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

    • Since this is a first-of-a-kind plant, the ideal candidate would have both conventional power project development experience and a creative and entrepreneurial mindset to help us determine what should be built, what aspects of conventional project development do we employ, and in which areas do we innovate
    • Understanding of power market dynamics and familiarity with levelized cost of electricity frameworks
    • Experience with financial modeling, structuring, and negotiating project finance transactions
    • Involvement in the commercialization of a first-of-kind energy technology
    • Strong network in utilities, power development and power financing sectors
    • Ability to balance strategic vision with detailed execution plans
    • Collaborative mindset and the ability to lead through influence across multi-functional teams
    • Experience with global energy market analysis preferred
    • Desire to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and to meet deadlines and complete time-sensitive projects
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
    • High degree of comfort with ambiguity; ability to effectively navigate uncertainty
    • Strong written and verbal communication
    • Ability to use discretion in handling confidential information
    • A mix of technical and business backgrounds is preferred
CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.
