Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

As a Structural Mechanical Engineer for the SPARC tokamak, you will perform thermal, structural, and electromagnetic analysis using hand calculations and finite element methods. You will write calculations, deliver presentations and interact with stakeholders to define the scope of your analysis and to explain the results of your analysis.

This team member will:

    • Conduct finite element analysis simulations to assess and optimize the performance of SPARC components
    • Develop detailed finite element models and meshing strategies to accurately represent the physical behavior of the components and assemblies
    • Perform hand calculations and verification of FEA results to ensure accuracy and reliability
    • Collaborate with the design and physics teams to define boundary conditions and loading scenarios for simulations
    • Interpret, analyze and present the results of the calculations
    • Generate comprehensive reports and documentation to communicate analysis results to cross-functional teams and stakeholders
    • Contribute to the development and improvement of tools and workflows

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

    • At least a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
    • At least 5 years of professional experience in performing finite element analysis
    • Strong understanding of structural mechanics, material properties, and stress analysis
    • Solid knowledge of the fundamentals of computational structural mechanics, including non-linear materials and contacts

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

    • Proficiency in ANSYS Workbench and Classic, and SpaceClaim
    • Ability to program in APDL and to script in Python
    • Experience pre- and post-processing of large computational models in a product development environment.
    • Familiarity with a CAD package, ideally NX
    • Solid background in performing structural hand calculations (e.g. statics, drawing free body diagrams, bolted joints)
    • Experience performing fatigue and fracture analysis in metallic structures
    • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME) related to structural design and analysis
    • Experience using DOE or other statistical methods to efficiently evaluate design spaces and robustness
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
    • Effective communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
    • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
    • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
    • #LI-Hybrid
