Product Manager, Platform - Science

The Human Cell Atlas is a major project for our science initiative. It is a multi-year, cross-organizational effort to build an open, widely accessible reference atlas of the 30 trillion cells in healthy men and women as a resource for studies of health and disease. We are seeking a product manager to define requirements and product roadmap for the Human Cell Atlas data store platform and own engagement with the community of developers who will be building applications on top of the platform. The ideal candidate will be energetic, organized, detail-oriented, flexible, a problem solver, possess excellent communication skills, and be able to adjust to the changing demands of the job.


    • Own key areas of the Human Cell Atlas data store infrastructure including cloud storage, indexing and querying, eventing to external subscribers, reporting tools, and services for developer applications
    • Define platform strategy and product roadmap, and prioritize APIs and platform features for development, and collaborate with  Engineering on design and delivery
    • Engage with and build a community of developers from laboratories around the world who will be building applications on top of the platform
    • Define and create reference implementations to serve as best-in-class examples of applications that the platform supports, working closely with the CZI Science team
    • Gather, prioritize, and manage feature requests from the developer community
    • Create developer documentation and own help outlets including Stackoverflow, Zendesk, and others
    • Run scrum for the platform engineering team which includes both CZI engineers and external engineers who are partnering with CZI on platform development
    • Monitor progress, proactively identify potential problems, and work with teams to fill gaps in capacity
    • Maintain a broad view of development activities across CZI and external engineering teams and ensure there is high collaboration and consistency in process
    • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and partner organizations on roadmap, integration touchpoints, and design reviews


    • B.S. in computer science or equivalent experience
    • 3+ years experience working as a product manager successfully driving product definition and development for large-scale data platform products
    • Experience with cloud infrastructure and related developer tools
    • Experience engaging with developer community
    • Works well with highly technical staff
    • Experience and knowledge of agile software development methodologies and productivity tools
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Must be able to collaborate and work with a diverse team across various geographies

Bonus Points

    • Background in biology, genomics, bioinformatics, or related field is a plus
