About Charm
Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.
Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. Since then we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, over a hundred employees, and now have three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. Come join us in 2024 as we aim to become one of the first companies to put 10,000 tons of carbon back underground!
We're looking to expand our team of ambitious creative and hands-on forward-thinking humans. We value psychological safety and collaboration. We take calculated risks and don't sweep mistakes under the rug; instead, we pin them to the wall and learn from them. We value that everyone’s unique backgrounds and perspectives shape their work. We encourage you to read our company values.
Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!
About the Role:
- Charm’s core competency is producing and injecting bio oil as a form of carbon dioxide sequestration.
- Injecting bio oil is a completely new field, and we need an engineering lead who is excited to work with a cross-functional group of folks (think geologists, logistics, engineers, automation, verification team) to lead the process development for injecting bio oil for all of our well sites.
- Your primary objective is to get to a working injection process for every type of pyrolysis oil that we produce, for every well that we have a permit for. Once the process is working, you’ll shift to burning down cost until we’re achieving bio oil injection at the lowest cost in every geography.
- This role will report to our Head of Engineering and interface cross functionally with both our operations and research teams.
Your Responsibilities:
- Develop and continue to improve processes for the safe and permanent injection of bio oil at a variety of different injection sites, each with different permitting and geological requirements. To do so, utilize both our lab analysis and small-scale version of our
- Drive clarity on the process steps that are necessary for Charm to achieve our permanent storage, and be able to articulate those to both the Charm team at large and any external parties.
- Spin up an external EPC to build and commission commercial scale processing systems for the bio-oil pumping, storage and transloading facilities at injection pads to ensure safe and efficient movement of bio-oil through necessary processing steps to the wellbore.
- Use both internal and external Charm resources to drive COGS for injection down as low as possible once the process is stable at any new site.
- You will be expected to travel as needed to ensure that our injection sites are stood up and commissioned, and handed off to our operations engineering team appropriately.
You Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in Oil & Gas or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience developing new processes that require a strong first principles understanding of the process and the ability to articulate that first principles understanding to external stakeholders who are approving the new process for production (think: regulators, our leadership team, external stakeholders).
- An ability to scale those new processes from bench top through commercial scale in a matter of months, utilizing both internal and external resources to make the impossible timelines possible.
- An unrelenting attention to safety, including the entire pyramid of engineering controls.
