About the role

Checkout.com is seeking a talented Legal Counsel to join our Legal and Compliance Team to support the business growth and expansion. The Legal Counsel’s main responsibility will be to draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements with suppliers, partners and customers and to also support our Data Protection Officer (DPO) in relation to data privacy and data security related projects. The Legal Counsel will also be expected to advise on regulatory matters including compliance with regulations as well as to produce and/or maintain a variety of internal policies and compliance related documents. 
 
The Legal Counsel will be part of a wider legal team and will need to collaborate with all core functions within the company. The successful candidate will be able to handle multiple areas of responsibilities both autonomously and with support of the Senior Legal Counsels in the team, demonstrating excellent critical and commercial judgement with a hands-on approach. This is a great opportunity to work on a broad range of projects across multiple jurisdictions and play a key role in supporting the company’s rapid growth.

Key responsibilities

    • Draft, review and negotiate a wide variety of commercial agreements, including strategic partnerships, complex business deals, data processing agreements and customised sales contracts
    • Assist the DPO with GDPR related assignments such as legal research, data protection impact assessments and other queries, as well as other data focussed projects requiring knowledge of data privacy and data protection related laws across our areas of operation
    • Assist with implementing our privacy governance framework to manage data use in compliance with the GDPR, and other applicable data protection and privacy laws
    • Resolve legal issues and contract interpretation matters that arise during negotiations
    • Produce and/or maintain various standard agreements (e.g. NDAs, DPAs, supplier and customer agreements)
    • Advise on special projects as needed, including new product developments (with a focus on privacy by design), while taking into consideration their legal and regulatory impact
    • Advise on commercial legal issues and risks across the group
    • Flag new legal and regulatory developments and consider their impact on Checkout.com
    • Conduct research on various multi-jurisdictional legal issues
    • Support the Company’s strategic projects and initiatives by providing creative, proactive and results orientated advice

About You

    • Qualified Solicitor/Lawyer in the UK, with 2+ years PQE in a leading law firm
    • Prior in-house experience (secondment or otherwise) would be an advantage
    • A strong corporate/commercial background and/or demonstrable data experience.  The ideal candidate will be able to show solid knowledge of GDPR and will have advised on its implementation
    • IAPP CIPP/E or other relevant privacy certification would be an advantage
    • Excellent time management skills and ability to manage a high volume of work
    • Ability to work autonomously and independently with minimal guidance
    • High level of written and interpersonal communication skills
    • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
    • Be open-minded and willing to accept new challenges
    • Fluency in English
