Mission
Anticipate technical and organisational challenges by guiding the architecture of digital products across value streams. Combine enterprise architecture thinking with hands-on leadership to coach software architects, enforce technical strategy, and ensure continuous improvement through agile delivery practices.
Responsible for orchestrating and integrating solutions across the value stream. Make trade-offs, support architectural governance, and define technical strategy alongside Product, Delivery, and Business leaders. Mentor, upskill, and guide Software Architects, ensuring consistency, quality, and long-term maintainability in engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Technology:
- Define and evolve the architecture runway, aligning enterprise strategy with Agile execution.
- Establish and govern C4 models, ADRs, and technical roadmaps across multiple teams.
- Define scalable and maintainable technical solutions for digital products.Guide adoption of core engineering practices (e.g., CI/CD, observability, resilience, contract testing).
- Act as a trusted advisor on cloud-native architecture, event-driven systems, and platform decisions.
Leadership & People:
- Lead and coach Software Architects and Senior Engineers across teams and domains.
- Support hiring, development, calibration, and career progression of technical leaders.
- Foster an architecture community of practice and promote alignment through shared principles.
- Create technical engagement, cohesion, and autonomy across squads and value streams.
Strategy & Process:
- Guide and support Product Management in defining and refining technical enablers and NFRs.
- Lead architectural rituals (PDCA, risk assessments, solution reviews).
- Ensure cross-team consistency, compliance, and reuse of architecture patterns.
- Anticipate and communicate tech debt, scalability constraints, and future capability needs.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience with system and solution architecture in scaled Agile environments (SAFe preferred).
- Proficiency with Java 17+, Spring Boot, and microservice-based architectures.
- Deep understanding of enterprise architecture principles, capability modelling, and value stream alignment.
- Cloud expertise in GCP (preferred) or equivalent (AWS, Azure), including Kubernetes, GitOps, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Strong background in event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pub/Sub) and distributed datastores (Spanner, BigTable).
Soft Skills:
- Clear communicator who bridges business strategy and technical delivery.
- Comfortable leading in ambiguity, with strong stakeholder management.
- Skilled in coaching and aligning senior engineers and technical leadership.
- Strategic mindset with hands-on delivery accountability.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with Lean Portfolio Management and architecture runway planning.
- Familiarity with platform enablement (observability stack, SLOs, service mesh).
- Exposure to enterprise architecture tooling (e.g., Backstage, Compass).
