Climate Power is an independent strategic communications and paid media operation focused on building the political will and public support for bold climate action. Founded by the Center for American Progress Action Fund, League of Conservation Voters, and Sierra Club, Climate Power integrates hard-hitting research, polling, state and national earned media, digital and paid media to influence the national conversation, embolden leaders to take immediate, bold climate action, and expose climate deniers and their oil and gas lobby allies. 

About This Role

Climate Power has an immediate position open for a Managing Director, States to lead Climate Power’s state work across the country. This position will oversee all of the organization's state efforts to drive a national narrative around the importance of climate and clean energy investments, sell the benefits of climate action in key communities, and block efforts to dismantle climate progress. The Managing Director, States will work with the Deputy Executive Director and rest of the executive team to develop strategies and plans to win the politics of climate change in the states, with a focus on Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

Primary Responsibilities

    • Strategy, Planning and Execution: Manages States program to drive a positive narrative about policy implementation that keeps clean energy and climate investments popular and defines the benefits for people and their communities. Develops strategy and work plans with the States team to achieve objectives. 
    • Team Leadership: Manage, motivate, and mentor a team of internal staff and communications consultants to drive Climate Power’s state work and foster successful collaboration with interdepartmental peers across the organization. Will supervise a team of 6 +, including state desks.
    • Strategic Communications:  Leverages Climate Power and in-state partners resources to increase local earned media activity and expand reach of clean energy narratives. Coordinate state press operations to help identify opportunities and threats, integrate local voices, events, and grassroots campaigns.
    • Collaborate with key climate partners: Oversees key partner relationships with groups that focus on climate/clean energy in the states. Ensure key partners, elected officials and others have the facts and messaging needed to amplify clean energy narratives and push back on oil and gas grassroots efforts. 
    • State Expertise: Provides key information on specific states for help in developing digital and paid communications that are relevant and persuasive to the local communities. Assist in state polling and other state specific research needs. And provide state specific reports to the executive team and funders on state landscape and resource gaps. 
    • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as need and capacity dictate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • At least 10 years of experience in issue advocacy, political campaigns or non-profit.
    • At least 5 years of management experience, including managing remote teams and consultants. 
    • Experience working on state campaigns required, political work preferred.
    • Deep understanding of the connection between state and national programs, and how to take national priorities and implement at the state level. 
    • Keen understanding of how coalitions work in the political ecosphere.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced campaign environment with unpredictable hours in high-pressure situations, and ability to think about problem solving creatively. 
    • Ability to collaborate with other teams to integrate organization-wide priorities into departmental plans.
    • Strong strategic and writing skills.
    • Climate or environmental issue advocacy experience preferred.  
$163,558 - $194,800 a year
Compensation is based on experience.
