We are looking for a collaborative and relationships-focused Organizer to join the Common Cause team in Oregon. This key role will engage people across our community – supporting our organizing and outreach programs and promoting civic engagement across the state – to advance our priorities at the local, state and federal level. This is an exciting opportunity to be a critical part of defending and strengthening democracy in Oregon in this critical moment.
This is a full-time role reporting to the Executive Director of Oregon and based in Portland, Oregon, with an expectation to travel to Salem up to twice per week during legislative sessions, and to various parts of the state up to several times per month. We hope our new Organizer will start in May.
Responsibilities
Grow, diversify, inform, and engage supporters
• Support activities to grow, diversify, and engage our base of supporters; including targeted outreach, education, recruitment, leadership development, and engagement
• Assist with nonpartisan education and outreach activities to cultivate an informed base of supporters and allies; for example, helping to develop compelling educational materials, communications, member briefings, collaborating with other staff to promote activities through social media and other channels, and more
• Assist with recruiting, supporting, activating, and coordinating individuals and teams to take part in our actions and activities; for example: letter-writing, petition deliveries, meeting with legislators, or events
• Assist with events, campaigns, and projects to advance our work – for example, as part of our election protection program, our legislative program, and campaigns on issues like ethics, government accountability, money in politics, and voting rights
• Manage discrete projects within broader program areas – for example, as part of our election protection program
• Act as a representative of Common Cause at community events and coalition meetings
• Build and maintain relationships with community partners and members
Support our research, education, and advocacy efforts
• Assist with research and advocacy efforts on democracy issues, by engaging members and allies in our work
• Stay up-to-speed on our issues and assist in tracking developments relevant to our work
• Collaborate with and coordinate volunteers and interns to support our work
Support fundraising and advisory board management
• Support the Executive Director and other staff in fundraising efforts, including donor cultivation, grant support, and reporting for foundations and major donors
• Assist with administrative tasks for the state advisory board, including meeting coordination, logistics, and preparation of materials

- Familiarity with office productivity tools including Microsoft Office, Slack, and Zoom
The following is required:
- Demonstrated interest in public interest advocacy campaigns and mobilization efforts
- Demonstrated interest in democracy issues (for example: voting rights, redistricting, campaign finance reform, disinformation, ethics, etc.)
- Demonstrated interest in the unique aspects of Oregon’s political dynamic
- Ability to travel 1-2 times per year for team and/or all staff retreats; and to travel to Salem up to two times per week, especially during legislative session, and to various parts of the state up to several times per month
- Based on Portland, with the ability to work in-person at least two days per week
- Per our nonpartisan policy, Common Cause staff members may not currently be in elected office (or running for office); on the Steering Committee or Finance Committee for any political candidate; or affiliated with the leadership of a political party
Additional information about this role
- This position is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit and specific employment terms and conditions are subject to collective bargaining negotiations.
- Common Cause is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time; please note that if hired, you will be asked to produce documentation for authorization to work in the US.
$62,000 - $78,000 a year
In order to ensure greater equity and transparency as an organization, Common Cause sets salary ranges consistently based on job responsibilities, and we determine salary for each staff member based on relevant years of experience (you can read more about our approach to compensation here, including where we offer geographical adjustments). For these reasons, we do not negotiate on our salary ranges or our specific salary offers.
