JOB SUMMARY
The Paint Surface Prep Technician supports the Paint Department by preparing parts for paint application. This position will learn the procedures to apply masking to components for in-process operations and will train on conducting a variety of surface preparations on turbine engine components.  

As a member of the Paint Department and Surface Prep (masking team) you will conduct pre and post-application tasks on turbine engine parts for in support of paint operations while learning information and theory on the preparation and painting of aerospace components.

Through our extensive in-house training program, the successful applicant will be instructed via a series of computer based and hands-on training, the necessary skills of the position.

This position will work alongside experienced Paint Technicians that allow continuous interaction of techniques, skill knowledge, print reading and interpretation. You will become familiar with various types of paint application and equipment.  As your skills increase, so will your responsibilities, giving you hands-on experience, growth, and additional responsibilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Through our extensive in-house training program, the successful applicant will be instructed via a series of computer based and hands-on training, the necessary skills of the position.
1.      Mask components as required to protect surfaces from scheduled painting operations.
2.      Apply tape by hand to areas of the part identified to be masked.
3.      Apply hard masking (tape) by following shop work instructions.
4.      Trim masking tape using knives, razor blades, or other sharp tools. Trim masking in accordance with work instructions to identified dimensions.
5.      Clean surfaces to be painted using solvents to ensure adhesion of the paint.
6.      Set-up necessary fixtures for holding parts during the painting process.
7.      Mix paint per manufacturer recommendations and work instructions.
8.      Perform grit blast operations to the part in preparation for painting.
9.      Remove all masking materials as required when completed.
10.  Wipe off any paint over-spray on non-painted areas.
11.  Bake part (ovens) as required per procedure.
12.  Load and unload parts in ovens in support of part post painting processes.
13.  Clean all fixtures and guns to ensure their proper use the next time they are used.
14.  Inspect work for completion and quality.
15.  Follow written work instructions accurately including sketches and drawings.
16.  Routinely use overhead cranes and other support equipment in the staging and preparation of components.
17.  Organize components staged in your department to support a more efficient schedule. 
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1.      6 months – 1 year of experience with various types of masking. (Ex: Paint, Blasting, Autobody, Plating, etc.)
2.      Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and follow work instructions and document processes and findings.
3.      Able to use measuring devices such as scales, micrometers, and calipers.
4.      Some experience with the safe handling of components/parts, including the use of overhead cranes.
 
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
1.      High school or technical school graduate or equivalent.
2.      Basic knowledge of computers and standard software programs.
3.      Read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
4.      Must be able to use hand tools and have good hand eye coordination.
5.      Ability to work independently and have the ability to perform the job with minimum supervision.  
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. Work in varying positions from time to time. Stand and/or sit for portions of the shift. Move parts (>50 pounds) using hoists, slings, carts, or other handling methods. Move less heavy parts (<50 pounds) with or without hoists, slings, or carts.
2.      This position has pre-employment testing requirements that may require fitness for duty testing (including respirator fit test) and a vision exam.
3.      Use of safety and personal protective equipment is mandatory under some conditions.

  a.      Ear plugs.
  b.      Safety glasses.
  c.       Uniform.
  d.      TyVek jumpsuits.
  e.      Respirators. 
5.      Exposure to dust and heat.
6.      Use powered and hand-held tools frequently.
