The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) I navigates electronic medical record systems and other medical databases; reviews medical records to determine patient elibility, abstracts medical record data related to disease and treatment; and records medical record data on paper or electronic case report forms. The CRN I works under the general direction of the Lead Clinical Research Nurse and/or Project Managers for study-related activities.

Maintains a professional approach respecting the dignity and confidentiality of employees, managers, and vendors.
Accesses EMR systems or centralized data warehouse for review of medical records. Screens potential patients for study eligibility. Abstracts medical data for completion of paper / electronic case report forms (CRF). Enters previously collected data into electronic database.
Responds promptly to queries regarding case report forms issued by the PM or other study personnel.
Reviews study protocols, CRFs, and other documents as needed to develop familiarity with study goals, and understanding of the CRN role on a study.
Uses other resources as needed to gain the knowledge required to perform CRN work on new studies (e.g., related to changes in treatment practice).
Shares medical knowledge and study-specific procedural knowledge with other CRNs as needed.
Interacts internally with the other CRNs, the PM, the Manager, HEOR Operations, and other scientific staff regarding ongoing and planned research. Works with IT staff to improve hardware and software functionality for CRN work. May interact with scientific or medical staff for guidance on medical issues, interpretation of medical record data, and coding decisions.
May interact with Data Warehouse vendor for issues related to Data Warehouse functionality. May interact with West Clinic research, medical record staff, and clinical staff on studies involving direct patient interaction. May have occasional direct interaction with patients for survey studies.
Attends staff meetings as scheduled. Participates in site initiation visits for each assigned study. Meets with the Manager, HEOR Operations, PM and/or senior CRNs as needed for adjustment of work assignments.
Other duties, as assigned, including review of selected medical records to assess rate of eligibility of subjects as part of feasibility work for potential studies, and other medical coding (e.g., classifying drugs, treatments, etc.).

    • RN or equivalent training and clinical experience, or equivalent training and knowledge of clinical practice. MUST have oncology experience.
    • Engagement in formal/informal ongoing training, obtaining and maintaining certifications, licensure, and membership in professional societies is desirable.
