The Role
We're looking for a Senior DBA to join our DataOps team, part of the DevOps & Infrastructure group. In this role, you will ensure the performance, reliability, and scalability of the database systems that underpin the ControlUp platform. You will be responsible for managing and optimizing large-scale (multi-terabyte) databases, improving complex query performance, and implementing best practices for database design, security, and maintenance.You’ll work closely with development teams to support their data needs – from writing and tuning SQL queries for reports to guiding schema design for new features. How You’ll Spend Your Day
- Manage and maintain our Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL OpenSearch and ClickHouse databases, ensuring high availability, regular backups, and proper security measures to protect data integrity
- Monitor database health and performance (indexes, storage, replication, etc.) using monitoring tools such as grafana, splunk
- Analyze execution plans and server metrics to diagnose performance issues and implement improvements that can handle our multi-terabyte data volumes efficiently
- Develop and maintain ETL workflows
- Collaborate with product and development teams to create SQL-based reports and dashboards, ensuring that data is accurate, accessible, and drives informed decision-making
- Use scripting tools (Bash, PowerShell, or Python) to automate regular database and CI/CD tasks Work closely with software developers to assist in designing database schemas, writing efficient queries, and troubleshooting database-related issues during development and testing
- Support our QA, DevOps, Security and product teams by providing expertise in data-related matters and ensuring database changes are rolled out smoothly through various environments
- Manage and configure databases in cloud environments (such as AWS RDS, Azure Database services, open search services), and help plan migrations or deployments of database systems to the cloud when needed
Your Experience and Qualifications
- 5+ years Experience as a DBA with RDBMS (MSSQL, PostgreSQL) on cloud environments (Azure, AWS)
- Proven experience in managing large-scale databases (hundreds of GB to multi-terabyte) and optimizing the performance of complex SQL queries and stored procedures
- Strong background in database architecture, schema design
- Proficiency in at least one scripting language or tool (Bash, PowerShell, or Python)
- Experience with CI/CD tools such as Azure DevOps, Liquibase
- Willingness to be part of a 24/7 on-call support rotation
- Hands-on experience creating or supporting BI reports using SQL – for example, writing complex queries or stored procedures to generate report data, and collaborating with development/product teams to deliver actionable insights
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical team members
- Familiarity with (SSIS) and ETL processes - an advantage
- Experience as a DBA with OpenSearch or ClickHouse - an advantage
- Experience with Docker - an advantage
