Civil Engineers (CE) are responsible for the design of structures, foundations, overhead wires, aluminum bus and/or site grading plans for electrical substations and transmission lines.  CEs are tasked with ensuring that designs, and their applications, are completed to code and standards set forth by the appropriate authoritative bodies.  In addition, CEs are required to work with customer representatives and Project Management Teams to ensure designs meet appropriate specifications and requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Designs and interprets drawings for the following:  grading, substation structures, foundations, overhead lines, lightning protection systems, aluminum bus systems, transmission structures, transmission foundations, transmission hardware assemblies, underground pipe networks.
Reviews drawings for substation equipment, vendor supplied equipment and customer standards.
Ensures compliance with customer specifications and design codes.
Checks fence, grading, overhead line installation, foundation and steel layouts and steel detail drawings.
Problem solves issues related to design, construction and compliance.
Creates and checks material list descriptions for Civil equipment.
Answers technical questions posed by construction managers, field staff, customers and their representatives.
Recognizes and recommend methods to improve every customer’s experience.
Travels periodically to both customer offices for project meetings and to job sites for construction visits.

Communicates regularly with supervisor regarding designs, concerns, studies or tests
Participates in continued education and training
Occasional overnight travel to active job sites
Must have clean driving record as use of company vehicles is a requirement of position

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Civil Engineering is required. 
EI or PE is preferred
Strong background in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required; strong verbal and written communication skills are required.

 WORKING CONDITIONS:
Office environment with minimal exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental hazards.
Occasionally overnight travel is required to an active construction site for a period of one or two weeks at a time.  Ability to perform duties safely and to adhere to each job site’s safety requirements; while working on an active job site, outdoors, is a requirement.
This position may occasionally require work to be completed in the field. When asked to do so, the conditions and requirements change to address special needs while working on an active job site.  Please refer to the addendum “Working in the Field” for information about requirements and conditions to be met while working in the field.
