About Us

Our mission is to cure cancer through high performance, accessible early cancer detection.  That means saving lives.

Delfi Diagnostics is a Johns Hopkins spinoff focused on the non-invasive detection of cancer at earlier stages, when it is most curable. DELFI uses artificial intelligence and whole genome sequencing to detect unique patterns of DNA fragmentation in the blood of patients with cancer. These analyses are performed through simultaneous examination of millions of DNA sequences using machine learning to identify tumor-specific abnormalities.

In our passionate pursuit to radically improve health outcomes, we serve humanity when we:

Lead with Science, Anchor in Pragmatism: We pioneer life-changing science by ensuring quality, transparency, and rigor at all times. We explore thoughtfully, experiment smartly, and deliver impact with conviction.

Build With & For All: We embrace diverse backgrounds to innovate and achieve together. We are not just building a product - we aim to disrupt the path of cancer for all - no matter geography or socioeconomic class

Put We over I: We are a home for high-performing people. Through teamwork, we build collective intelligence. Each of us wins when those we serve and those who serve with us--win. We show up with empathy, humility, and integrity at every step of the journey.

About the role

In this role, you will work with a cross-functional team of Bioinformatics Scientists, Genomic Scientists, Software Engineers, and other Data Scientists to develop machine learning models based on genomic data of individuals at risk of cancer. Your work will provide critical insights for cancer detection and other cancer-related applications in public health. The ideal candidate will leverage excellent foundations in statistical theory and machine learning methods to develop innovative approaches for analysis of high-dimensional data, and the ability to communicate technical concepts to a multidisciplinary team.

This is a direct hire, full time opportunity on-site at Delfi's Baltimore location (subject to Covid risk levels, working from home as needed) and relocation assistance may be provided. Remote candidates may be considered based on strong experience in developing machine learning models for high-dimensional genomic data.

What you’ll do

    • Develop machine learning models to make accurate predictions about cancer and other genomic characteristics
    • Design novel approaches for high-dimensional models and models for variation in high throughput sequencing
    • Work with researchers to establish statistical representations of whole genome sequencing (WGS) data that reflect cancer-driven changes
    • Collaborate with other teams on experiments to understand impact on classification performance

What you'll have accomplished 12 months from now

    • You will have designed and implemented models for cancer detection
    • You will have explored hypotheses around high dimensional models and representations of DNA fragmentation
    • You will have conducted analysis around the performance of new machine learning models in studies of cancer

What you’ll bring to DELFI

    • PhD in Biostatistics or a related field or MS with three plus (3+) years of experience
    • Excellent understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms
    • Experience with common data science toolkits and libraries, such as R/caret/tidyverse, and Python/scikit-learn/pandas
    • Able to work on a cross-functional team in a collaborative environment, and present work to a wide audience

    • Preferred
    • Familiarity with developing models for high-dimensional data, including Bayesian inference in a large parameter space
    • Expertise in computational analysis of high-throughput technologies in genomics
    • Knowledge of cancer genomics and epigenetics
Delfi’s Covid-19 Vaccination Mandate: Delfi Diagnostics requires that all employees be fully vaccinated for Covid-19.  Proof of vaccination or sincerely held religious belief and/or medical exemption is required upon hire. Delfi Diagnostics will engage in an interactive dialogue process with employees who have documented medical conditions and/or sincerely held religious beliefs that would prevent them from getting vaccinated, in accordance with all applicable laws.
