The Creative Director (CD) provides design and creative leadership to our growing in-house creative team. This position is responsible for connecting the creative approach to the business strategy and Delta Dental’s focus on being the oral wellness solution to our members and our communities. The Creative Director guides the art concept and visual creation and sets the creative direction for every consumer and employee touchpoint.

The Creative Director must be able to convincingly present creative concepts to all parties. This person must exhibit outstanding creative and design judgment and guide the Creative team in achieving the highest possible standards appropriate for all materials regardless of channel. The Creative Director obtains a working knowledge of clients’ business challenges and leads innovative and conceptual solutions to address those challenges, getting personally involved on high profile and complex creative challenges. The Creative Director consistently seeks to enhance the level of creativity generated by team members.

    • Has deep experience in digital design principles and channels including social media, web, and ad formats
    • Encourages individuals to take on specific roles to deepen existing or develop new skills
    • Builds a collective team vision and defines goals and objectives
    • Promotes the professional development of department by encouraging staff to stay abreast on current design trends and technology
    • Understands how data informs the creative product and uses data to track market trends
    • Provides creative direction and coaching while partnering with staff to accomplish creative objectives
    • Provides creative quality control over concepts and execution
    • Directs complex, large-scale project activities and effectively leads and manages work of the creative team
    • Converts rough ideas into visual prototypes (e.g., sketches, layout drafts) to illustrate concepts for creative reviews
    • Directs and is accountable for the final development and production of creative assets and ensures accuracy, attention to details and overall meets or exceeds the design objectives
    • Brainstorms and strategizes with creative team to help develop creative direction and leads execution of creative work on select projects including development of concepts
    • Provides brand guidance and direction to ensure consistent alignment with brand standards
    • Motivates the team to deliver a consistently high-level of quality as evaluated by clients
    • Works to improve the team’s performance by pursuing opportunities for continuous learning/feedback
    • Constructively helps and coaches team in their professional development through informal and formal feedback sessions
    • Guides the workload, development, and growth of all the designers
    • Implements and refines conceptual development/ideation process and defines and coaches team on presentation expectations
    • Exhibits a “can-do” approach and inspires and motivates associates to excel
    • Fosters a team spirit that is reflective of their collective personalities
    • Nurtures a culture that is fun to work in and helps build an open creative community
    • Proactively addresses staff performance issues
    • Builds strong relationships with internal client and is perceived as a credible, trusted advisor
    • Partners with internal clients to achieve effective outcomes in an efficient manner
    • Works with clients to articulate creative needs concisely, yet completely
    • Appropriately balances client desires, business requirements and marketing strategies

What we look for:

    • Bachelor’s degree in design, advertising or a related field is required
    • Minimum of 10 years professional experience required; with 5 as an art director
    • Minimum of 3 years management experience required
    • Portfolio required
    • Big picture thinker
    • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage differing viewpoints so the final product remains true to the objective
    • Proven leadership skills to maximize team talents
    • Hands on experience in design
    • Effective communication and presentation skills
    • Demonstrates experience in brand development as well as traditional and emerging multichannel marketing
    • Develops creative strategies to address marketing and business objectives
    • Articulates the creative rationale that drives the concept’s execution and tactics
    • Directs team as brand advocates, but also encourages and develops new interpretations of the brand standards and out-of-the-box approaches to grow the verbal and visual identity of the brand to meet ever expanding company needs
    • Leads with passion that energizes the team to over-deliver against expectations and results in high employee engagement and overall job satisfaction
    • Celebrates team and individual successes and creates a safe environment for constructive feedback
    • Anticipates problems and sees how a problem and its solution will affect other projects, people or processes
    • Understands that all projects require attention to detail so that work is on-time, on-budget and on-strategy
