Applied Scientist (Geoscience)

Santa Fe, NM or San Francisco, CA or New York, NY
With streamlined access to petabytes of science-ready geospatial data and the computing power to go with it, the Applied Science team at Descartes Labs is building a digital twin of the earth.  We model our planet by combining sensor data with a mix of physical, statistical, and machine learning modeling approaches.

We’re looking for geologic modeling experts to make sense of this data, provide value to our clients, and develop new approaches for working with large amounts of geospatial data.

    • Use geospatial remote sensing data sets, including seismic, gravity, magnetics, and satellite data to model earth systems
    • Creatively combine geologic, ancillary data, and client data to answer tough science questions and solve client problems
    • Interact with clients to brainstorm methodologies and present results
    • Work with our engineering team to continuously improve our platform

Required Skills & Experience

    • Bachelors and advanced degrees (MS/PhD) in relevant fields (e.g. Geology, Environmental Science, Geophysics, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics)
    • Strong statistical background
    • Experience with geospatial remote sensing data
    • Demonstrated proficiency in a scientific programming language (preferably Python)
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Self-motivated and able to work independently

    • Exploration experience in oil & gas or mining
    • Experience with geophysics workflows or seismic data processing
    • Experience with numpy, sklearn, scikit-image
