Applied Scientist (Agronomy)

With streamlined access to petabytes of science-ready geospatial data and the computing power to go with it, the Applied Science team at Descartes Labs is building a digital twin of the earth.  We model our planet by combining sensor data with a mix of physical, statistical, and machine learning modeling approaches.

We’re looking for agronomic data scientists to apply this data and computing power towards interesting agricultural applications at scale. 


    • Use our archive of satellite imagery, weather data, and other geospatial datasets to develop and build large-scale crop models
    • Collaborate with product managers to develop new products, feature datasets, and capabilities relevant to the agriculture market
    • Work with solutions managers to communicate progress to clients and translate the results of scientific analyses into actionable insights
    • Actively participate as a member of a cross-disciplinary team, openly communicating your ideas, insights, and feedback and helping to continuously improve processes

Required Skills & Experience

    • BSc in a relevant scientific or quantitative field (e.g. agronomy, agricultural sciences, biostatistics)
    • Demonstrated background developing statistical, machine learning, and/or simulation models for agricultural systems
    • Proficiency in Python, or in another scientific programming language with the ability to quickly pick up new technical skills
    • Experience working with remote sensing and geospatial data
    • Strong problem solving skills, with the ability to research, develop, and implement solutions to novel problems
    • Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as within a team


    • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in a relevant field
    • Experience with remote sensing and/or climate data assimilation
    • Familiarity with cloud-based and/or distributed computing
