We are seeking a Director of Metabolic Engineering to lead research efforts focused on engineering microbial strains for the production of a wide variety of products. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in both Strain Engineering and Metabolic Engineering within microbial hosts, along with expertise in preparing and executing technical plans. Strong leadership skills and experience managing R&D teams and projects are essential. This position reports to the VP of Bioengineering.
Responsibilities
- Manage the 10-member Metabolic Engineering team.
- Collaborate with the VP of Bioengineering and other leadership to design and implement processes for continuous improvement in product development.
- Prepare, execute, and oversee technical plans.
- Evaluate experimental designs for technical soundness and alignment with company objectives.
- Provide coaching to team members on experimental design and data analysis.
- Maintain the quality of processes and methods within the technology team, ensuring data quality, document management, and access.
- Participate in project team meetings as a technical expert.
- Work closely with the Project Management Office to ensure task completion and alignment with overall objectives.
- Ensure that the scientific team remains focused on key deliverables, maintaining a clear vision and timeline for project milestones.
- Participate in evaluating new product opportunities and assessing technical risks.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metabolic Engineering, or a related scientific or engineering field, with at least 5 years of relevant leadership experience.
- Relevant industrial experience is a must, with preference for Industrial Biotechnology.
- Proven experience leading teams and projects involving engineered microbes, laboratory automation, and handling large datasets.
- Strong quantitative, data-driven analysis skills, with an analytical mindset.
- Experience in metabolic flux modeling and biochemistry enzymatic kinetics and inhibitions.
- Experience drafting and revising technical plans, detailed methods, SOPs, and protocols.
- Experience managing direct and indirect reports.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-disciplinary teams.
- Must be a self-starter, motivated, scientifically curious, and collaborative.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends.
$160,000 - $200,000 a year
