The Sr Scientist, Protein Sciences, is a key researcher and future team leader of critical initiatives in particular on protein and antibody expression, purification, and molecular cloning. Responsibilities include analyzing research and development projects, planning and execution at the bench. Strong cell culture and protein biochemistry skills will be used in this role.  Scope of work may include laboratory and field research, product development, and technical support.  This role is responsible for the research and development of new and novel antigens and antibodies for use in the medical diagnostic industry using the latest and most advanced technologies. In this role, you will be enabling in house capabilities through industry standard practices for bacterial and mammalian expression systems.

Snapshot of Responsibilities

    • Spending majority of time (70%+) as a bench scientist, you will be:
    • Responsible for teamwork on multiple protein engineering projects through Research and to Product Development to support new products.
    • Applying your extensive experience to troubleshoot laboratory issues, using both equipment and appropriate methods.
    • Providing technical advice on competitor products, new products, and scientific concepts that may lead to new products.  Maintaining an ongoing surveillance of marketing, scientific, and patent literature to stay abreast of new developments and products that may impact OraSure’s business
    • Participating in the preparation of supporting data documents for regulatory submission to the FDA in support of our regulatory department.
    • Designing experiments, evaluates data, communicates results to others and determines subsequent course of action consistent with project and company goals.
    • Working as an independent team member with low level of supervision and direction from management. You may be responsible for associates’ contribution and timeline for specific projects. 
    • Preparing and presenting papers at scientific meetings and/or publishing papers in scientific journals.
    • You may have direct reports and responsible for reviewing, coaching, developing critical skills
    • You may lead technology transfer and supports validation of new products & processes.
    • You may participate in cross-functional core teams as required
    • You will maintains timely execution of notebook and documentation according to Quality Department
    • Be responsible for supplies ordering, equipment maintenance and cleaning lab.

What You Bring

    • Experienced in technical skills for expression and purification of recombinant proteins: Affinity, SEC, HIC, IEX, analytical and preparative chromatography.
    • Demonstrated technical and scientific skill and experience in designing recombinant proteins, framework analysis for antibodies, designing vectors for prokaryotic and mammalian expression systems.
    • Experienced in plate-based assays, development of reagents and optimization of samples and strategies.
    • Experienced in BLS2+ lab, working with potentially infectious human samples, performs all work under safety guidelines at all times
    • Experience with infectious diseases such as bacterial and viral pathogens and samples.
    • Demonstrable communication skills, written and oral, including a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, alignment software, MolBio software/tools.
    • Conjugation expertise, Immunoassay experience, affinity measurements by SPR/BLI, epitope mapping/design a plus.
    • Willing to work at the bench and to assist in teaching technical skills to subordinates and/or colleagues.
    • Must be able to demonstrate scientific knowledge and application.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent time-management skills, multi-tasking skills and efficient execution on deliverables.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and in presentation. Ability to be collaborative at all levels and cross-functionally, accept direction when needed, enthusiastic, self-motivated required
    • Capable of working in a laboratory or office environment 40 hours/week
    • Able to frequently stand, walk and bend to have the ability to access various areas of the laboratory
    • Capable of operating a computer 
    • Capable of giving and following instructions
