The Rapid Response Press Assistant is a critical member of the DNC's communications team. The press assistant is the core part of the rapid response team, ensuring coordination, leading administrative responsibilities, monitoring and tracking news events, and drafting press materials. Applicants should have an exceptional eye for detail, a solid command of writing, a strong grasp of the media landscape and news cycle, an understanding of AP style, and be ready to work in a fast-paced environment. This position reports to the Rapid Response Director and Deputy Director and is part of the DNC’s War Room operations. 

Responsibilities

    • Work in coordination with the communications team to craft and execute the DNC’s rapid response strategy;
    • Identify opportunities to accomplish messaging goals by following news events, tracking interviews, and monitoring breaking news throughout the day on a variety of sources, including online/print sources, social media, and cable news;
    • Track Donald Trump, JD Vance, and notable members of the White House, Cabinet, and GOP to identify opportunities for the rapid response team; 
    • Drafting press releases, press pitches, and other written communications materials;
    • Help manage the drafting and distribution of written materials, from drafting to delivery; 
    • Assist with press pitches, including identifying reporters, compiling research, and drafting pitches;
    • Monitor news throughout the day, and compile and produce morning press clips;
    • Supervise the department’s intern(s), from hiring to day-to-day supervision;
    • Other duties as assigned to support the department and the DNC's mission.

Qualifications

    • Applicants should have an exceptional eye for detail, excellent written and verbal skills across multiple media, a strong ability to multitask, and enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced environment;
    • Understanding of AP style;
    • Ability to manage multiple projects at once;
    • Ability and desire to keep up with the news cycle;
    • Willingness to work outside of traditional work hours;
    • Proven interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills with the ability to build strong relationships with staff at all levels;
    • Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and a positive attitude.
$54,100 - $54,100 a year
The starting salary for the Rapid Response Press Assistant position is $54,100, on an annualized basis, commensurate with experience and qualifications.  This is a full-time, non-exempt position, which means you will be eligible for overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 in a given workweek. This position is in the bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local-500.
