Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas, Westlake Village and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art. 

We are seeking a motivated engineer with excellent leadership, communication, and mentoring skills to serve as the manager of the Mechanical Products team at HRL Laboratories. The Mechanical Products team is part of a wider integrated product team working together to design and build advanced cryogenic test systems in support of HRL’s world-leading silicon quantum dot technologies. The position involves managing a team of mechanical engineers supporting the design of hardware and system builds of cryogenic test infrastructure. Key responsibilities will include technical leadership, maturing design processes, mentoring staff within the group, shaping career development plans, and supporting a culture of technical excellence across functional teams.  In addition, this manager will need to work with upper management in forming strategic technical planning supporting critical programs and career development plans that are consistent across multiple teams.

Essential Duties:
Oversight as a technical leader the design of cryogenic test systems leveraging experience in fields ranging from mechanical hardware design, modeling/simulation, to systems engineering practices.
Provide strategic plans and guidance to the team on key customer objectives and deliverables.
Team staffing responsibilities include generating personnel forecasts, recruiting, writing job requisitions, and hiring.
Mentoring staff to support their career development including conducting employee performance reviews, career develop discussions, and building an environment of inclusivity.
Provide mechanical design related feedback to the team in design reviews.
Participate with cross functional teams to improve program, design, and configuration management processes.
Help build and maintain relationships with our customer and partners through technical excellence and integrity (e.g. communications via reviews, written reports, etc.).
Support future business development involving proposals and critical strategic planning.

Required Skills: 
At least three years of management experience overseeing mechanical engineers technically and in their career development.
Experience in performing mechanical product designs and analysis along with strategic planning are desired.
Experience in the execution of several product life cycles.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience with CAD and PDM tools (preferably Solidworks).
Experience with systems engineering processes.
Experience developing and coaching for leadership and performance.
Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to work independently.

Required Education:
Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline with at least 8 years of industry experience.

Special Requirements:
U.S. citizenship is required.
Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance.

Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $163,150 - $209,088 + bonus + benefits.
