Quantum Device Intern

Malibu, CA /
Science & Engineering - Materials & Microsystems Laboratory – Materials & Microsystems /
/ On-site
Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.

HRL Laboratories works on the development of silicon spin qubits, including in-house fabrication, measurement, and analysis.  Critical to efficient control and characterization is a seamless interface between the qubit devices and the classical control hardware and software.  Internships on the Quantum Hardware team at HRL Laboratories provide a unique opportunity to work on an impactful, independent R&D project in the emerging field of quantum information technology.

The project areas include:

Control Electronics: How we create the low-noise voltage signals that are required to orchestrate complex quantum operations in a silicon quantum device.

Cryostat Design: How we faithfully transmit low-noise voltage signals from the classical room temperature environment to the quantum environment at milli-Kevin temperatures.

System Monitoring and Feedback: Quantum operations are prone to errors. A competitive quantum computing hardware stack has the ability to characterize and compensate the inevitable errors that occur during quantum operations.

Successful interns will have strong problem solving skills and be clear communicators.  Quantum experience is not necessary for many internship projects we have in mind! However, strong candidates will have a solid background in electrical engineering or physics.  We typically accept advanced undergraduates and all stages of graduate students.

We hope interns will view HRL Labs as a future employment prospect. Interns who seek a full-time position in the future typically benefit from an expedited interview process.

The pay range for this position is $22 - $35 per hour.
