Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas, Westlake Village and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.

In this role, you will be joining the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory. Our mission is to push the frontiers of devices, structures, and materials with applications such as electronics cooling, aerospace thermal management, and automotive thermal management. You will support the application of new electronics packaging and additive manufacturing methods to yield novel solutions to challenging aerospace, hypersonics, automotive, and defense needs. Opportunities abound for a self-driven engineer to grow within our group.

Essential Duties:
Design, CAD, and coordinate fabrication & assembly of prototype components and systems using microfabrication, electronics packaging, additive manufacturing, and/or conventional machining
Setup and operate test setups to characterize thermal response of prototype systems (temperature, heat dissipation, heat flux)
Setup and operate test setups to characterize fluid dynamics response of prototype systems (flow rate, pressure drop)
3D print test samples and prototypes by selective laser melting, stereolithography, and other methods
Test mechanical and materials properties (hardness, tensile testing, flexure testing, etc.)
Coordinate outside vendors for special tests or analyses
Summarize key findings in written documents and slides
Work effectively on a team as well as independently.

Required Skills:
Understanding of the basic principles of mechanical engineering, including statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics
Hands on testing experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) Thermal testing, (2) Fluid dynamics testing, and/or (3) Mechanical testing

Desired Skills:
Experience designing, implementing, and testing packaging for electronics thermal management, including air-cooling and liquid-cooling.
Experience with COMSOL Multiphysics, or other commercial Finite Element Analysis software for thermal, thermal-fluid, and thermo-structural modeling.
CFD Experience
CAD Experience (e.g. Solidworks or Inventor)
Knowledge of semiconductor & MEMS microfabrication and electronics packaging
Knowledge of packaging for electronics thermal management, including air-cooling and liquid-cooling
Knowledge of temperature measurement techniques and electric heater controls
Knowledge of Design for Additive Manufacturing
Knowledge of Additive Manufacturing processes and materials
Detailed knowledge of heat transfer

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree plus 2 years’ experience or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Physics, or related discipline.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be familiar with safe chemical handling practices and common laboratory safety procedures. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment. Ability to work independently is required.

Special Requirements:
US Citizenship Required. Must have or be willing to apply for and maintain a security clearance.

Keywords:
Thermal Management, Heat Transfer, Electronics Cooling, 3D Printing, Additive Manufacturing

Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $99,705 - $124,683 + bonus + benefits.

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the target for new hire salaries for the position.
