Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.
We are looking for a principal software engineer to help us develop the future of quantum information technologies. Scientists and engineers at HRL use our quantum software development kit every day to operate, understand, and advance our quantum devices, which includes state-of-the-art developments featured in top scientific journals. As a principal software engineer on the quantum device software team, you will be responsible for leading the technology roadmap as well as architecting and developing software for the automation and characterization of our devices.
Essential Duties:
The principal software engineer will provide technical leadership and execution for our growing team of developers working on professionally written experimental physics software.
Design software for the autonomous execution of complex sequences of experiments, measurements, and calibrations.
Design software for characterization and benchmarking of quantum devices.
Work closely with experimental physicists to understand requirements and ensure software designs enable all required laboratory capabilities.
Work closely with data engineers to define how to organize and store quantum device data.
Coordinate the break-down of architected designs into packages of work that other software engineers can help build.
Mentor other software engineers to ensure code follows design plans, conventions, and is properly tested and documented.
Participate in organizational planning and other administrative duties.
Required Skills:
Software engineering leadership at HRL values up-to-date, hands-on, working knowledge of brass-tacks programming.
Solid programming skills with 10+ years relevant software engineering experience.
Advanced to expert-level understanding of at least one programming language.
Solid understanding of core computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and computer architectures.
Current working proficiency in Python, though the need for more thorough training and practice is acceptable.
Fluency with software engineering practices such as version control and continuous integration.
Experience with one or more relational database system.
Experience working with physical hardware.
Experience with a scientific discipline. Laboratory experience is a bonus.
Special Requirements:
U.S. citizenship. Must be able to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance as required.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $159,000 - $264,000 + bonus + benefits.
Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
