Dynavax is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company developing and commercializing novel vaccines to help protect the world against infectious diseases. We also supply CpG 1018 to research collaborations and partnerships globally. Currently, CpG 1018 is being used in development of COVID-19, plague, shingles, and Tdap vaccines.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Director of Data and AI Architecture to lead our strategic data architecture initiatives across the Dynavax enterprise. This role will be instrumental in designing and implementing a robust data ecosystem that supports business-wide processes, with a focus on Data and AI enablement, and digital transformation. They will play a key role in our strategic cloud migration initiative, helping transform our enterprise data architecture into a modern, cloud-native ecosystem.

Responsibilities

    • Central accountability to implement responsible Data and AI practices that comply with evolving regulations (e.g. GDPR; EU AI Act or Industry standards) and Dynavax ethical principles.
    • Lead efforts to streamline our data processes, improve data quality and consistency, and enable more efficient analytical capabilities across the organization. 
    • Build an AI-ready data foundation that allows us to leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence to enhance business decision-making across all domains.
    • As a member of the Dynavax Data and AI committee this position will play an important role in advising the Committee on AI solutions, investments and benefit analysis (e.g. ROI).
    • Work collaboratively across the business and IT and demonstrate excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
    • Help improve data and AI Literacy across the organization.

Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related technical field. Master's degree preferred.
    • 8+ years of experience in enterprise data architecture or systems design.
    • Strong knowledge of AI operating model and data governance, lineage, and metadata management principles.
    • Ability/experience to establish data governance councils, stewardship, and quality frameworks.
    • Proven experience with large-scale data migration projects and cloud transformation.
    • Deep understanding of enterprise architecture frameworks and methodologies.
    • Familiarity with data operability standards (HL7/FHIR; CDISC; OMOP).
    • Strong technical background in database platforms (Databricks; Snowflake; Amazon Redshift).
    • Understanding of cloud architecture principles (AWS preferred).
    • Enterprise systems architecture.
    • AWS and cloud technologies.
    • Data modeling and design.
    • Data lineage and governance tools.
    • ETL/ELT processes.
    • Big data and analytics platforms.
    • Financial risk systems and methodologies.
    • Programming knowledge (Python, SQL, etc.).
    • DevOps and CI/CD principles.
    • Knowledge graph and semantic web technologies.
    • Machine learning operations (MLOps).
    • AI-focused data catalog tools.
    • Schema registry and metadata management systems.
    • Feature store architecture for machine learning.
    • Ability to influence executives and translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
    • Ability to sit for prolonged periods; reach with arms and hands; lift and move small objects; use hands to keyboard and perform other office related tasks including repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
    • Occasional travel required, as needed.

    • Additional Knowledge And Skills Desired, But Not Required:
    • Life Sciences/Pharma/Biotech experience preferred.
    • Cloud platform certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect).
    • Enterprise Architecture certifications (TOGAF, Zachman).
    • Data Management certifications (CDMP, DAMA).
    • Project/Program Management certifications (PMP, Prince2, Agile/Scrum).
    • AI/ML certifications or specialized training.
    • Familiarity with global requirements like GDPR, NIS2, EU AI Act.
$261,000 - $289,000 a year
The estimated salary range for this position is $261,000 to $289,000.  Final pay determinations may depend on various factors, including, but not limited to experience level, education, geographical location, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position also includes other compensation elements such as stock equity awards and participation in our Company’s discretionary annual bonus program. Dynavax also offers a full range of health and welfare insurance benefits, 401(k) company match, and paid time off benefits, including 17 paid holidays in 2025.
