Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Payroll and Staff Accountant to join our finance team. This unique role is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll, while also performing various staff accounting duties to support our financial operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of both payroll regulations and accounting principles, with a keen eye for accuracy and efficiency.

Payroll Functions

    • Process bi-weekly or semi-monthly payroll for all employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
    • Calculate and process employee benefits deductions, such as health insurance, 
    • 401(k) contributions, and other voluntary deductions.
    • Maintain and update records of payments under the company’s Educational 
    • Assistance Program and monitor for compliance with IRS regulations.
    • Administer onboarding of third-party payees and remittance instructions under the company’s EAP; research and troubleshoot uncashed or misdirected items and refunds of payments.
    • Reconcile payroll general ledger accounts and resolve any discrepancies.
    • Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll, benefits, and deductions.
    • Assist with year-end payroll processes and audits.
    • Stay up-to-date on changes in payroll laws and regulations.

Staff Accounting Functions

    • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including preparing journal entries and reconciliations for various balance sheet and income statement accounts.
    • Reconcile bank accounts and other financial statements.
    • Prepare financial reports and analyses as needed.
    • Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable as required.
    • Support budgeting and forecasting activities.
    • Maintain accurate financial records and documentation.
    • Assist with internal and external audits.
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of accounting processes and procedures.

Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
    • 3-5 years of experience in both payroll processing and general accounting.
    • Strong knowledge of payroll software (e.g., ADP, Paychex, QuickBooks Payroll, and Prism) and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP).
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs) and other Microsoft 
    • Office Suite applications.
    • Thorough understanding of federal, state, and local payroll tax laws and regulations.
    • Solid understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
    • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • High level of integrity and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

    • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation.
    • Experience with a specific ERP system relevant to our organization.
$68,000 - $72,000 a year
