POSITION SUMMARY
The Clinical Veterinarian reports to the Research Veterinarian and maintains clinical oversight of the medical grade neonatal piglet population for the eGenesis production site. Additionally, this individual will manage personnel within the veterinary and neonatal teams. The Veterinarian will implement adventitious agent surveillance programs, provide clinical and regulatory support for GMP donor production, and some surgical support for donor production programs. This individual also serves as the attending veterinarian on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage teams of neonatal care staff and veterinary technician staff. Provide personnel management including goal setting, performance reviews, conflict resolution, scheduling and training documentation oversight.
- Oversee team performing resuscitation and assessment at weekly c-sections. Evaluate neonate piglets and work with neonatal care team to implement treatment plans for any health concerns that arise.
- Perform necropsies and submit diagnostic samples for relevant clinical cases to ensure health of donor and surrogate herds. Provide any needed medical or surgical treatments to herd animals. Oversee preventative care including any vaccination programs.
- Oversee all diagnostic testing and records.
- Perform ultrasound examinations for clinical assessments – intermediate skill level for abdominal imaging with plan to develop echocardiography skill.
- May serve as backup surgical and/or anesthesia support for surrogate herd (embryo transfers, c-sections). Train to provide backup support for laparoscopic ovum pick-up procedures.
- Backup clinical support for surrogate herd including routine medical cases, ultrasound diagnostics.
- Collaborate with veterinarians and leadership across other eGenesis sites to manage veterinary care and population health programs.
- Participate in IACUC activities including inspections, protocol review, and serving in the Attending Veterinarian role on the committee.
- Draft, review, and revise SOPs relevant to neonatal, veterinary, and general animal care activities.
- Participate in scientific meetings with Cambridge and Wisconsin sites, including donor production, adventitious agent, and other regulatory meetings.
- Work collaboratively on all Veterinary Science Department activities, which includes working in close partnership with other veterinarians
- Implement adventitious agent program for manufacturing site, including directing and executing all surveillance sampling projects, implementing any vaccination programs, participating in disease diagnosis investigations, as well as staff training and compliance with the strict biosecurity requirements of the facility. This person will be involved with creation and compliance with all written SOPs and action plans related to adventitious agents. Coordinate planning and assay development with other stakeholders in development team, other eGenesis veterinarians and managers, and consultants.
- Ensure compliance with company biosecurity practices to safeguard health of all animals produced by eGenesis. Work in collaboration with veterinarians and PBS team to identify potential biosecurity and husbandry process improvements in the SAF and DPF. Promote and adhere to safety in the workplace. Report unsafe acts and conditions and ensure equipment is maintained correctly. Report all accidents/incidents. Inspect work area and take remedial action to minimize or eliminate hazards: complete required training assignments, forms, and other paperwork.
- Promote and adhere to the eGenesis animal welfare policies. Follow all applicable regulatory requirements (USDA, FDA, OLAW) regarding animal welfare and ensure humane care according to the Guide for the care and use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act.
- Perform other duties and assume additional responsibilities as assigned.
- Tasks are completed during regular business hours Monday-Friday. As essential personnel, occasional animal work outside of normal business hours or availability for emergency response may be required but very limited.
- Support from leadership to enroll in continued education opportunities to maintain certifications, attend seminars and career development.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- DVM or VMD from AVMA-accredited institution; may substitute completion of ECFVG program for graduates of non-AVMA schools.
- License to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state; must attain Indiana licensure within 6 months of hire.
- DEA Registration for maintenance of controlled drugs on site.
- USDA Accreditation Category II

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- ACLAM board certification or residency training in laboratory animal medicine with eligibility to take ACLAM board exam
- Background in either swine management/research or experience in breeding/neonate management of any species. Significant swine medicine experience desired.
- 1-3 years of management experience
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands or arms, lift files and operate a computer. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust to focus. The employee frequently is required to lift laboratory supplies and equipment within the daily routine. Occasionally the employee may be required to handle and work with large animals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in multiple environments, including office, laboratory, surgery, necropsy, and animal husbandry environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, filing cabinets, and fax machines. This job may require the use of hazardous chemicals, conduct sample collection on livestock and operate in a dusty environment.
