Laboratory Operator I, II, III

Pittsburgh, PA
Laboratory Operations [CMU Cloud Lab] /
Contract to FTE /
On-site
The Carnegie Mellon Cloud Lab (CMU Cloud Lab) is the world's first academic Cloud Lab offering a 24/7/365 remote-access facility with over 200 scientific instruments.

Based on the concept pioneered by two CMU alumni through their company, Emerald Cloud Lab (ECL), the CMU Cloud Lab is located in Pittsburgh in the Bakery Square neighborhood in close proximity to CMU’s main campus. The Carnegie Mellon Cloud Lab is powered by the same software running ECL’s facility in Austin, TX, making all operations executable in either facility.

The CMU Cloud Lab provides researchers full control over laboratory processes, data inputs, outputs and sharing. All processes are fully traceable, end-to-end, and enhanced with auxiliary sensor data and sample/asset tracing, creating rich and comprehensive datasets that researchers can investigate and learn from using thousands of powerful functions for data visualization, analysis, and simulations.

The Role

The demand for our service is growing, and to meet that demand, we are recruiting Lab Operators looking to explore opportunities in the biotech space and grow with our organization. Qualified candidates will receive comprehensive lab and safety training, allowing them the ability to run protocols in our Pittsburgh facility. These protocols are critical to sustaining the high-quality operations of the facility and provide experience working in ECL’s unique, process-driven lab environment with our integrated software tools.

The Laboratory Operations (LabOps) team is charged with executing the logistical aspects of our laboratory processes. All scientifically relevant aspects of each experiment are executed using robotics and automation, and it is the job of LabOps to set up and maintain the robotic instrumentation on which the entire lab runs. The LabOps team relentlessly clears the queue of customer and internal experiments and keeps the manual and automated instrumentation running at all times while focusing on precision and efficiency. The entire CMU Cloud Lab facility is run in a systematic way and the team's purview encompasses all experiments that enable this, from maintenance and control of instruments to inventory intake and receiving. The LabOps team interfaces with many teams at the CMU Cloud Lab which rely on the Operations team to be the voice of high-quality feedback as they seek to streamline the internal systems on which the Cloud Lab runs.
