Controller

Alameda, California
Emerson Human Capital Internal Organization – Finance / Accounting /

This part-time role requires meeting in our beautiful office one day a week.

You’re at the top of your game. You love finance and services, you’ve been a controller for a number of years. And you’ve stepped out of the career path for a minute to focus on your life and your family. But something is missing. You want to reengage.

Imagine working in a place where you do more than just add value—you make lives and businesses better. And you do it while managing the rest of your busy life.

We’re a privately held change management consultancy that helps companies turn people potential into business performance. We’re looking for a Controller to join us.

The people are great, the work is challenging, and the culture is warm, yet performance-driven. And we promise you will laugh a lot more than you did at your previous job.

Reporting directly to the VP of Finance and Operations, you will coordinate and execute our general ledger, project accounting and financial reporting. • Supervise and develop the Accounting Manager and staff, serving as their key technical resource.
    • Manage the preparation of all financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, reports to stakeholders, tax returns, and reports for insurance and government regulatory agencies.
    • Ensure accounts payable, customer billings, collections, cash applications and payroll are processed accurately and executed on a timely basis.
    • Maintain project reporting in our ERP (Deltek) to ensure accurate and timely access to information.
    • Prepare general ledger reconciliations.
    • Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget.
    • Coordinate the preparation of the annual budget and forecasts.
    • Represent the company externally to government agencies, auditors, and clients.
    • Work with senior leaders to develop financial strategies and plans.
    • Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.

What You Need

    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is highly preferred
    • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related field
    • A minimum of 5 years of experience in general and project accounting, and full-cycle financial close for professional services
    • Proven experience in finance management, accounting, audits, budgeting, and analysis.
    • Exceptional leadership skills and the ability to supervise and mentor staff.
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and our clients.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.

What We’d Love to See

    • Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems – extra points for Deltek.

Why Emerson?

We were the first US company with a large team of full-time employees specializing only in behavior change. We employ only experts, like you. We’re not an IT consultancy or an accounting firm that also has a specialized practice – critical behavior change is all we do.

We are thought leaders in human performance. For example, the Association for Talent Development published our book series, which covers some of our favorite principles, tips and lessons learned: The Change Book, The Learning & Development Book, and The Technology Change Book.

We deliver for the best. We are the choice of some of the most successful and well-known companies in the world. We don’t like to drop names, mostly because our lawyers won’t let us. But if we did, we could tell you about an iconic clothing brand, an oil and gas giant, a global leader in hospitality, and a company that makes really fast shoes. Just to not name a few.
