Scientist/Senior Scientist - Translational Genetics

San Diego, CA
Target Discovery and Biology /
Full-time /
On-site
Position Description: Empirico, a biotechnology company that combines unmatched expertise in human genetics-driven target discovery with world-class capabilities in siRNA drug discovery, is looking for a talented human geneticist skilled in the analysis and interpretation of large-scale human genetics data for therapeutic target discovery. The ideal candidate will apply their background and experience in genetics, molecular biology and disease pathophysiology towards both identifying novel therapeutic targets and formulating mechanistic hypotheses that can be evaluated experimentally. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated, creative scientist to be a vital member of our team.

Responsibilities:

    • Your responsibilities will include leveraging large-scale human genetics data to identify, evaluate, and conceptualize novel therapeutic targets, and helping to translate these insights into therapeutic programs. You will be expected to -
    • Lead the design, execution, and interpretation of human genetic analyses in pursuit of novel therapeutic targets
    • Apply established and novel analytical approaches for the identification of genetic associations with human health and disease
    • Translate findings from human genetic analyses into therapeutic hypotheses with plausible mechanistic underpinnings, that are supported by orthogonal evidence and that can be evaluated experimentally
    • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams of geneticists, bioinformaticians, biologists, chemists, and drug developers to design and execute in silico, in vitro and in vivo studies to explore and validate therapeutic hypotheses
    • Communicate genetic discoveries internally and externally through expert-level presentations and the preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication
    • Provide novel ideas and critical thinking for the continued development and improvement of Empirico’s drug discovery platforms
    • Survey the latest developments in the broader genetics community and incorporate relevant approaches and findings into internal efforts

Requirements:

    • This position requires a PhD in Human Genetics, Biomedical Informatics, or a related discipline, or a Master's degree in combination with at least one year of experience in human genetics research with a translational focus
    • Demonstrated ability to design, lead, interpret, and communicate the results of human genetics studies, and to discern therapeutically-relevant hypotheses
    • A firm understanding of the principles of statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology
    • Though a background in molecular biology is preferred, familiarity with the design of experimental studies performed to understand the functional impact of genetic variants and the mechanistic basis for genetic associations is a must; however this position is NOT for applicants with primarily a wet-lab background
    • Applicants must have authorization to work in the U.S.
The estimated base salary range for this role is $80,000 to $130,000. Individual compensation decisions will be based on various factors, such as primary work location, complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills.  We offer a wide range of benefits including a retirement savings plan (with company match), paid vacation, holidays, and health benefits to include medical, prescription drug, dental and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans.
