The Behavior Veterinary Assistant works closely with the veterinarian to facilitate appointments and assists the entire behavior team to keep the day running smoothly. The assistant prepares the room for each patient, ensuring both behavior and dietary needs are met. They prepare the discharge from a template and add to that document during the appointment for review by the veterinarian following completion of the appointment. During appointments, their role is to provide treats / distraction / redirection as needed, provide enrichment and take notes on key discussion points for the discharge. Following the appointment, they assist in checking clients out, scheduling follow up appointments, and providing medication (where appropriate) as well as preparing the room for the next appointment. In this fast paced and emotionally charged (humans and animals alike) environment, the behavior team is looking for someone who keeps a cool head under pressure, communicates well with a team, and is able to take direction (even at a moment’s notice for safety reasons). Their additional duties include assisting with daily laundry, cleaning rooms between clients, documenting communications in the medical records, and sending / documenting discharges.
Empathy and compassion for our clients and patients is paramount to assist in forming a long standing relationship with the service and the hospital as a whole, understanding the needs of this client base, and the mental health conditions these patients suffer from. They must be knowledgeable about the purpose of why clients should pursue consultations with a veterinary behaviorist, as well as, have an in-depth knowledge of the services provided. They will need a basic level of cross-training as a technical assistant and positive reinforcement training skills so that they can assist in appointments – this can be provided as “on the job” training for the right candidate.

Essential Functions/Technical Duties
- Generate and send referral letters
- Prepare appointment room for consultations / Clean appointment room following consultations
- Perform daily housekeeping duties – laundry, bowl / enrichment cleaning, enrichment and treat stocking
- Comfortable relaying information from the veterinarian to the client
- Knowledgeable about commonly diagnosed behavioral and medical conditions and their treatments
- Knowledgeable about various medical tests and what they entail
- Other duties as assigned
- Ability to work flexible hours when required
- Consistently detail oriented and highly organized
- Ability to work independently when given a task
- Fear Free Certified Professional Level 1 - either current or completed within 3 months of start date
