Technical Director
The Engine is looking for an experienced product development & engineering manager to work with our technical founders and teams as they make and refine their technical plans, problem solve, and begin to scale.
The position reports to the CEO/Managing Partner of The Engine and has responsibilities for all portfolio companies’ technical and engineering needs. The position also supports The Engine Program, The Engine Room, and The Engine Fund.

Key responsibilities include:
Work closely with The Engine companies to help them understand and overcome technical challenges
Help guide The Engine companies’ engineering management and communication structure; acting as an engineering coach and advisor
Develop and execute processes for effective operation of The Engine’s labs, which including chemistry and biology labs plus machine shops and maker space, working with the lab manager.
Help The Engine companies make progress by facilitating access to equipment and labs in the Boston-area and building relevant strategic relationships
Act as technical liaison to operational leaders at external partner labs and facilities
Make recommendations for additional technical resources and how to engage these resources (e.g. people, equipment, service providers)
Work closely with The Engine investment team on investment decisions in order to align the resources we have for greatest impact

Experience:
Required 4-5 years of direct engineering management experience, preferred 8-10 years
Required experience in one or more of the following industries: aerospace, automotive, energy, semiconductors, chemicals, or medical devices
Required Experience in scale-up/manufacturing and operations
Required Experience with requirements engineering, verification and validation (V&V), and systems engineering
Experience with complex systems design (e.g., satellites, vehicles)
Regulatory experience - NASA, NHTSA, FDA, FCC, FAA, NRC, etc.
Experience with safety-critical systems
Experience with standards and certifications such as UL marking, CE marking, ISO 13485, and NASA/MIL standards
Design For Excellence (DFx) experience - manufacturing, test, assembly, reliability, etc.

Skills and Qualifications:
Required Bachelor of Science or Engineering or equivalent
