MBA Internship, 8 week summer internship

The Engine, founded by MIT, is a $200M venture fund and support platform focused on early-stage companies developing world-changing technologies. It offers long-term capital (The Engine Fund), access to specialized equipment (The Engine Room), connectivity to industrial and academic partners (The Engine Network) and the entrepreneurial knowledge and guidance to succeed (The Engine Program).

The Engine is located in Central Square in Cambridge and operates a 25,000 square-feet facility with co-working offices, a bio lab, a wet chemistry lab and a prototyping shop. Since opening its doors in June 2017, The Engine has committed resources to 11 companies and created an unprecedented framework for bringing tough tech from the lab to the commercial world. Description 
Summer interns will work in teams of 3-5 students on projects in defined tough tech areas in collaboration with The Engine staff. Projects include defining the landscape (scientific, technical, business and policy) and identifying new opportunities such as key problems to be solved or potential types of new solutions to existing problems. Teams may work with existing tough tech companies of The Engine depending on the project.

Outcomes of the Internship:
• Final report and presentation with recommendations on where & how The Engine would “lean in” for certain tough tech areas
• New relationships forged with peers, The Engine and others
• Intellectual growth • Potential for authorship on publications by The Engine

Skills and Qualifications 
• Motivated by The Engine’s mission to enable tough tech entrepreneurs to create world-changing companies
• In a MBA program at a top-tier program, between 1st and 2nd year with ability to be “full-time” for 8 weeks in the summer; students in MPP/MPA joint programs welcome to apply
• B.S. or B.A. in a science or engineering discipline
• Work experience prior to entering MBA program is an advantage
• Students with significant activity in “convergence” areas; those that have participated and organized large events/competitions; or those that have participated and organized teams (sports, armed forces) are encouraged to apply.
